HAZEL JEAN KOONING (nee CLARK) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Hazel Jean Kooning on March 9, 2014. Hazel was predeceased by her parents Mary and Albert Clark, and husband William (Bill) Kooning. Hazel is survived by her two sons Clark (PJ Dawson) of Mississauga, ON and John (Cheryl, Jay and Brook) Kooning of Stonewall, MB. Also mourning Hazel's passing are cousins Fred and Gwen Sharp, and Joan Lovel of Winnipeg. Hazel was born in Winnipeg in 1928 and attended St. John's High School. In 1954 mom married William Kooning and resided in Winnipeg until 1958 when they moved to Toronto. Hazel lived in Etobicoke and Mississauga before moving back to Manitoba in 1981. Moving back to Manitoba was like a reunion for mom and dad, seeing many familiar faces that had been missed for so long. Hazel returned to the workforce for 10 years working as a Sheriff's Officer for the Province of Manitoba. Mom loved sports. As a young woman, she enjoyed downhill skiing and skating. Mom enjoyed golfing, bocce, curling and playing cards. Playing bridge was her absolute favourite pastime in the last 20 years as she made many beautiful friendships at the bridge table. Hazel was a wonderful cook with many people asking her to make her own recipe book. Recipes and recipe books were overtaking her condo, but she rarely ever followed a recipe as she just had a knack of making any dish by sheer instinct. The family would like to thank Dr. T. Panaskevich for her compassion and wonderful care during Hazel's illness. Thanks, also goes out to the staff at Riverview Palliative Care Unit (3rd floor East Wing) and her homecare workers. Homecare workers Maria and Gina were especially considerate during mom's most difficult times. Thank you to Frank and Alice, Mike and Mary, Heide and Wayne and mom's dear friend Gerry and to all her friends at her apartment building who have helped in times of need. As mom often said, "Why should I go to a home, when my friends are here giving me the best care I could ever get." - And, of course, Haze was right again! Haze, you could not have been a better mom! We love you and will miss you very much. In lieu of flowers, you may wish to donate to a charity of your choice. A celebration of Hazel's life will be held on Thursday, March 13, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at the Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery). Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • My deepest sympathies. It is a heart wrenching experience losing ones mother no matter when it happens and there is no one else like a mother. You always spoke of her bridge playing abilities and what a remarkable lively person she was, keep those memories alive. Take care. Noreen Stone - Posted by: NoreenNNnnnn (friend) on: Mar 12, 2014
