GRACE KATHLEEN ASHCROFT
Date of Passing: Mar 15, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGRACE KATHLEEN ASHCROFT It is with heartfelt compassion that we announce the passing of our mother Grace Kathleen Ashcroft, (nee Campbell), beloved wife of the late Gordon Ashcroft, mother, grandmother and sister, on March 15, 2014. Grace was 85 years of age. With her family at her bedside, our hands and hearts in hers, a single tear in her eye and a gentle squeeze of our hands, our mother peacefully passed on. Grace leaves to mourn, her daughter Arlea; son Derek; grandchildren Brianne and Sean; sister Dorothy Wilson; and daughter-in-law Shirley Mitchell. Mom loved life and more than life, she loved her husband, children and grandchildren. Mom carried a very soft, kind, tender and giving heart. There was nothing she would not do for her family. On May 14, 1949, Mom and Dad were married, Gordon was the love of her life. Their relationship was a testament to love. An undying affection between companions that united them for over 54 years, built on a love that was steadfast and true. Second only to her family, was the love Mom had for Sandy Hook. Mom shared fond memories of clearing lots by hand, the Winnipeg Beach roller coaster, dance hall and the trains bringing people out to the beach. Golf at Sandy Hook became her summer passion, and she eagerly awaited visits from her family and grandchildren at the cottage and in later years, her summer home. Sandy Hook was truly home for Mom, and where her heart was. Mom was a young girl at heart, enjoying such things as Charlie Chaplin movies, a love for clowns and collecting them, Disney World and the song "It's a small world". In Mom's youth, she spent time at Grand Beach and Winnipeg Beach. As she grew older, her destinations broadened - Canada, the U.S. and England. Mom and Dad were snowbirds and had a winter home in Kissimmee, Florida. Throughout Mom's life, she was active in sports such as skating, skiing and golf. In early adulthood, Mom showed, handled and bred dogs. Mom worked for the government in finance and when it was time to bring children into this world, she dedicated her life to her family. While raising her children and until her late 70s, Mom had a passion for cooking, baking and crafts, and was always involved in something. She hand-made and sewed our clothes as young children, did leather work, cross-stitch, ceramics, trichem, petit point, doll making, knitting and card making...she shared this passion with many friends and others teaching and involving them. Above all else though, nothing was more important than the time she could spend with her family, especially her grandchildren, Brianne and Sean. A special thank-you to Shirley Mitchell for the love she consistently extended to our Mom, and Tudor House for their compassion and care over the past seven years. Our Sunday visits will be cherished... you will always be loved and forever missed Mom. Memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 27, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, followed by reception. Interment / burial will take place prior to the service at 1:00 p.m. in the Garden of Resurrection at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. Arlea and Derek, as I read this posting, I picture the inside of your house. I see cookies, there were always cookies. But I remember when you got that pin ball machine, you were the envy of Kootenay Cres. The trips to Sandy Hook are so clear in my mind and the one dog that stands out is the Doberman, his name escapes me right now. Your parents were always so kind to me and the crafts that your mom created were fun. I do wish I had held onto all those hanging macramay? plant holders I made. - Posted by: Sharon Vickner (Friend and neighbor) on: Nov 19, 2014

Arlie and Derek; so sorry to hear about your Mum. I worked with your Mum many, many years ago (beginning in 1957) in finance (then the Comptroller General's Office). What great times we had. I can still see your Mum driving down Broadway in that little MG car of hers; top down, tunes cranked and a kerchief on her head. She was a fun person! In those days the office personnel would all get together many times a year and party. Great times! She always had stories about her dogs - boxers at the time. I remember how excited she was when you both arrived. Her family was complete. My condolences. - Posted by: Marlene Wilson (work friend) on: Mar 27, 2014

Derek and Arlea, I remember both of your parents with great fondness. What stands out most for me about them was their longstanding devotion to one another. I picture them in their cottage on 14th Avenue, baking on the table, surrounded by dogs...My sympathies to you both. - Posted by: Terri Philpot (family friend) on: Mar 26, 2014

Arlea and Derek and family, sending thoughts and prayers to you at this most difficult time. I have many fond memories of your mom and dad as neighbours in Sandy Hook. Your mom was a beautiful lady with a warm heart. Hugs, Debbie - Posted by: Debbie Northrup (nee: Anderson) (Friend) on: Mar 24, 2014

Grace and Gord got me my fist job as a scooper at a dog show when I was about 13. She used to lend me her MG sports car for a weekend. a pretty good deal for a 16 year old, and her 64 Pontiac. Foundest memory is heading to Florida in my truck camper with Gord Grace Arlie and Derek, Margie and Ryan in the back. - Posted by: James murray (Nephew) on: Mar 22, 2014

We were neighbours of Gracie at Sandy Hook and have fond memories of her. She was a very kind and friendly person. We remember her cheerfulness and her love of singing. She will be missed. Our sympathies go out to the family. We are currently out of the country and are not able to attend the funeral. - Posted by: Dave and Bonnie MacPherson (Friends) on: Mar 22, 2014

What great memories we have of Grace. I met and worked with Grace for years in the comptroller generals office back in the early '60s. Grace and Gordie introduced us to rallying...loved it. We also spent good times at their Sandy Hook cottage over a delicious meal. Our sincere sympathy to Arlea and Derek and family. She certainly will be missed. - Posted by: Carol and bob kirkhope (Friend and coworker) on: Mar 22, 2014
