GARY LORNE JONASSON 1957 - 2014 The family of Gary Lorne Jonasson is deeply saddened to announce his sudden passing on Friday, March 21, 2014 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Gary was born on August 25, 1957, the 4th son to Halfsteinn and Jonina Jonasson of Riverton, Manitoba. Gary's proudest accomplishments were always his kids; they were his reason for being. He will be so terribly missed by his children, whom he talked to every single day, Sarah, his Princess, and her husband Eric Platt, son Daran who he was so close to, and their mother Heather, who was always his dear friend. He will also be missed by his son Tim Mussell of Winnipeg. Gary is once again with his son Jared, who predeceased him in February 2013. Gary touched the lives of everyone he knew. He was a beautiful spirit who always only saw the good in everyone and who loved everyone unconditionally. Nobody had flaws, they were just more interesting. He loved and is loved. Gary had a free spirit and set off on his first adventure in 1973 to see Western Canada, thus began his life-long journey to collect as many experiences and friends along the way. He was also a jack of many trades; having worked in so many different areas - from psychiatric nursing to sheet metal, refrigeration, plumbing and diamond drilling - an eclectic mixture of skills added to the uniqueness of who our Gary was. His brothers and sisters will miss him more than words can say; his oldest brother Brian (Shirley) Jonasson, Harley (Sharon), Dale (Pat), Karen (Arthur), Murray (Christine), Tracey and Robyn, along with many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly, as well as many friends and extended family. Predeceased by his parents Hafsteinn and Jonina, his brother-in-law and nephew Michael and Corey Guttormson, his mother-in-law, Doreen Guttormson, his niece Cheryl Gallagher and his dear son Jared, whose passing he grieved deeply. The family would also like to thank Dean Matthews and Wade Gislason for all of their love and support to Gary over the years. Celebration of Gary's life will be held at the Riverton-Hnausa Lutheran Church on Saturday, March 29 at 2:00 p.m. There will be a lunch to follow at the Riverton Community Hall. Gary's legacy is the spirit he left and shared with all of us; please join us and share your stories and memories of our Dad, Brother, Uncle and Friend. In Gary's memory, donations may be made to the Icelandic River Heritage Sites, Box 555, Riverton, MB, R0C 2R0. We miss you and love you Dad. Condolences & Memories (20 entries)

  • Gary and I shared some incredible moments that were certainly off the chart of so called "normal" people. He was always reaching for the spiritual stars and you know what, Gary, you made it. I love you Gary and always will, for love is eternal. Words cannot express the intensity that Gary felt for us, but our hearts can feel it. Till we meet again, my friend and rare treasure, Gary, rejoice and thank you for being you. - Posted by: Maxine Corrington (Lifetime Friend and "Soul Mate") on: Jun 08, 2014

  • So very saddened to hear of Gary's passing. He was a very interesting character and was always concerned about others. Goda Nott Gary, you will be missed by many. - Posted by: Donna Isfeld (Cousin) on: Apr 07, 2014

  • The last time I saw Gary we were at Auntie Jonina's in the lodge. We had alot of laughs that day. I'll always remember Keith telling the story of Gary taking his boots when Gary's boots got wet and how he had to chase him to get them back. I think they were about eight or nine. Silly story but a good and a happy memory. RIP Gary, I'll never forget that smiling face. - Posted by: Karen Slomke (nee Gudmundson) (First Cousin) on: Apr 04, 2014

  • We were having a 15 year olds birthday, for my daughter Sarah, on the front door was a sign that said Happy Birthday Sarah. Earlier that day I was having a conversation with a work mate about crazy tattoos and Harvey porth's finger tattoos came up, for those of you that know of this tattoo will surely chuckle. So the house is full of 15/16 yr olds listening to music and enjoying the party. The front door flies open and in steps Gary followed by Harvey, Gary singing happy birthday too Sarah of whom he had never met. I asked her the other day if she remembered and she laughed and said Ray that was one of the most memorial birthday moments of her life. It was amazing to see them both, Harvey of whom I hadn't seen for twenty yrs, but spoke of him that very day and Gary who put a whole other spin on a fifteen year old girls birthday! I have never met anyone like Gary whose personality demanded an audience wherever he found himself. I will miss you old friend, until we meet again, you were laid to rest on my 48th birthday. I'll never forget your laugh! Your heart and your positive attitude! Rest well Gary, never will you be forgotten!!!!! - Posted by: Ray johnson (Friend, and brother) on: Mar 31, 2014

  • We got ice skates for Xmas. I had no clue how to skate so he tied a rope to the back of this big brown car and told me and his daughter to hold on and he pulled us all over. It was a blast lol, but I never did learn how to skate, but I did have the time of my life ♡♡♡look after the boys - Posted by: Jessica Guttormson (niece) on: Mar 31, 2014

  • My family, the one's who knew Gary, and the one's who heard of him through our parents; we all have a special spot in our hearts for him. We each have our reasons; but all are especially grateful for how dear he was to our parents. He entered their lives at a time when they were experiencing crisis and heartache. Our family would agree with all the comments already written here which speak of Gary's love for people and his friendliness. Our parents spoke of how proud Gary was to be able to introduce his family to them. We would often hear of his visits. Mom liked your character, Heather, and loved the children. Gary was a man after Dad's heart. For me personally, the highlight of the time I knew Gary was when he talked of how he came to understand who Jesus was and what He had done for all people, on the cross. He talked of how he came to choose to believe it and accept that free gift of salvation. The way he came to place his faith in Jesus Christ was miraculous and unusual, but none-the-less real. We look forward to meeting him in heaven someday. My family, riddled with problems as we were, accepted Gary's presence in our lives as someone G-D had sent to bring comfort and cheer to our parents... may it be a comfort to you now, Gary's family, that no matter how confusing life is, G-D does not forsake His children. Perhaps the acceptance so many felt from Gary was that he might have understood something about looking at people the way G-D does. G-D looks at the heart. Like the old hymn says, "He looked beyond my faults and saw my need." I spoke with a few of my family about Gary's passing. They agreed that I should write this on the family's behalf. Love and prayers from our family to yours in this time of grieving your tremendous loss. • If everyone had the positive energy that Gary did, the world would be a far better place. I don't know what to say. This shouldn't have happened. All I can think is that when we see the good in others and try to foster it, Gary lives. - Posted by: Eric Platt (Son in Law) on: Mar 28, 2014

  • I don't think there's a picture out there of Gary not smiling! "He was a beautiful spirit who always only saw the good in everyone and who loved everyone unconditionally. Nobody had flaws, they were just more interesting." That sure hit the nail on the head! If only we could all take a life lesson from him. Rest in peace cousin. - Posted by: Denise (cousin) on: Mar 28, 2014

  • Gary was my Mom's nephew as Gary's Dad, Hafsteinn's was her favorite brother and she always commented on Gary's friendly personality. He always visited her (even at work). He was not only my 1st cousin, but always had time to talk. Gary was one of the most friendly people I have ever met. He was very intelligent and could discuss anything - I sure enjoyed his visits while living in Riverton. (Mom Sigurlin his auntie, commented that Gary was only troubled at times, but such a friendly and nice guy, and always found time to talk to everybody he met which was so true. Bless his heart - he will be missed and I am sure he will find some of his answers to things in life up in Heaven.
