WALTER ADOLF LERCH It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful husband, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Walter passed away peacefully with his family at his side at Riverview Health Centre on March 29, 2014. Walter will be lovingly remembered by his wife Dorothy, of 59 years, sisters Elsie Hay, Shirley (Fred) Chernenkoff, Janet (Richard) Gunn, brother Arnold (Betty), and sister-in-law Betty (of deceased brother Herb). He will also be greatly missed by his grandchildren Adam (Jessica), Kayla (Fritz) and Milyssa, great-grandchildren Gordon, Lila and Kallie, extended family Pat, Diane and Billy, and numerous family and friends. He was predeceased by his son Kurt Lerch, parents Euphrosine (Zena) and Adolf Lerch, brother Herb, and sisters Ruth Greig and Evelyn Luft. Walter was born on January 21, 1928 in Germany and immigrated as an infant to Rosenfeldt, Manitoba. He moved multiple times around Manitoba, eventually settling in Winnipeg with his family. Walter was the oldest of eight brothers and sisters and started work at the age of 15. He worked proudly by his brother's side as a truck driver for his father's company when he met and married his wife Dorothy in 1954. He continued driving trucks as a career, and worked for Conforce until he retired in 1995. Walter will forever be remembered by his family and friends for having a warm heart and smile who would drop anything he was doing to help out. He had many hobbies from making tables and wood décor, doing puzzles, bingo, bowling and he played a wicked game of crib or cards. His grandchildren were the apple of his eye to him. He would always have patience and teach them to make things in the workshop, teaching them to ride a bike and drive them wherever they had to be last minute. He was at almost every hockey game they had and cheered them on even if they were in the penalty box. For anybody who knew Walter, he would never say no or miss his daily cup of coffee with his buddies. We would like to thank Riverview Health Centre for making Walter's short stay as comfortable as possible. A Celebration of Walter's Life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 4, 2014 at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9 or a charity of one's choice.
