GARTH HELME CLARY Garth Clary was born on August 24, 1939 in Gilbert Plains, Manitoba. He grew up and went to school in Dauphin before relocating to Winnipeg to enter the funeral profession with Bardal Funeral Home. He graduated from the Western School of Funeral Service in 1964 and received his Funeral Director's Licence. While working in Winnipeg he met the love of his life, Lucy (Lucille) Davidchuk after seeing her sing in a choir. They were married in October, 1964. Garth worked for funeral homes in both Dauphin and Selkirk where he became very involved in the community. His precious daughters were both born in Selkirk before the family moved to Portage la Prairie in 1973 where he first worked and then managed the Omega Funeral Home for 30 years. Over the length of his career in the funeral profession, Garth held many positions on the Manitoba Funeral Association Executive. Garth was a member of the Portage Alliance Church where he was actively involved for 40 years. He was also a member of the Portage Rotary Club for many years and enjoyed organizing the annual Rotary Vegetable Sale. He enjoyed fishing, playing golf, curling, camping, canoeing and was an avid water-skier until the age of 67. His hobby after retirement was in an investment group called "Going for Broke" with a few friends. They didn't always make money but they had fun trying. He and Lucille loved to travel overseas and enjoyed their winters in Palm Springs, California with his sisters. They made many friends while there. Garth's life revolved around people, meeting new and old friends and helping to take care of those he assisted through his job as a funeral director. Garth had a wonderfully compassionate, caring and gracious personality. He was a very devoted husband, father, grandfather and a special friend to many. He will be fondly remembered by all those whose lives he touched with his hearty laugh and generous heart. Most of all, Garth loved Jesus and embraced God's grace and faithfulness, especially through his battle with IPF. He was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Marjorie Clary, and brother, Basil. He leaves to mourn his wife Lucille; two daughters: Jodene Clary Maughan (Bernard) and grandson Freddie of Singapore; and Deidre Sagert (Sean) and two granddaughters Paige and Ria of Winnipeg; his three sisters: Pat (Ron) McPhedrain of Comox, BC, Maureen (Jack) McLeod of Fairfield, CA, and Darlene (Roger) Aitken of Dauphin, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Viewing will be held at the Omega Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. at the Portage Alliance Church in Portage la Prairie. The Clary family invites you to stay afterwards for a time of fellowship and remembering Garth. Interment will take place prior to the service at Hillside Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations can be made to either the Portage Alliance Church Building Fund or the Portage Rotary Club as they were both dear to Garth's heart. A tribute DVD in memory of Garth will be produced by the Omega Funeral Home, condolences may be sent to the family c/o Omega Funeral Home, 83 Royal Road South, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 1T8, 1-800-303-4621 or friends may leave a message of sympathy on our website www.omegafuneralhome.com "Dedicated to those we serve"
