Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryVERA MAE HARRINGTON On March 30, 2014, with her family by her side, Vera Mae Harrington (nee Kinnaird) age 88 of Winnipeg, Manitoba, peacefully passed away at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, MB. Mom was born on August 26, 1925 in Carberry, MB. She was the third of six children born to Arthur and Mabel Kinnaird and spent her early years living in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Her fondest memories were her years in Maryfield, SK. She loved to follow her big brother around even when she wasn't welcome. She enjoyed ice skating, watching her Dad curl and her brother play hockey at the local rink. The family moved and settled in Portage la Prairie in the early 1940s. When Mom was in her late teens she moved to Winnipeg. She began a career at Staber's Beauty Salon as a hairdresser. Mom made some very close friends at Staber's, and those friendships continued throughout the years. Even though Mom lived and worked in Winnipeg, she took the bus home to her family each weekend. On August 28, 1948 Mom married Roy Harrington in Portage la Prairie. In 1949 they moved to Beach Avenue in Elmwood where they made many wonderful neighbourhood friends. The Harrington family hosted frequent parties in their "rumpus room". All three of their children were born while they lived on Beach Avenue. In the late 1970s, Mom worked as a home care worker. Her nurturing, kind-hearted, compassionate and dedicated character made this job a perfect fit. Mom retired when she was 65 and moved to Charleswood, and for the last two years she lived in Tuxedo Villa. Mom loved to read, play bingo, dance and listen to music. Her pride and joy was her family. She was most content when she had all her "chickens" together. She was an exceptional mom, grandma and great-grandma and will be dearly missed. Mom is preceded by her mother and father, Mabel and Arthur Kinnaird; brother Elwood Kinnaird; sister Lauretta Wishart; brothers-in-law Frank Bochek, James (Buck) Mullins. Mom is survived by her three children and spouses: Wayne and Colleen Nichol of Sherwood Park, AB; Pat and Mariette Harrington of Winnipeg and Kelly and Leanne Harrington of Oakbank; grandchildren Fletcher (Melissa) Nichol, Graham Nichol and Jamie (Mike) McLaughlin of Sherwood Park, AB; Bradley (Zebrina) Harrington and Stacey (Steve) Martin of Winnipeg; Mercedes Schmidt and Shawn Harrington of Oakbank; great-grandchildren Claire and Eric Nichol of Sherwood Park, AB and newborn Nathan Harrington of Winnipeg; sisters Lillian Bochek (Nanaimo, BC), Betty (Leith) Shearer (Saskatoon, SK), Jean Mullins (Collingwood, ON); brother-in-law Jack Wishart (Portage la Prairie); nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the Emergency Room staff at the Grace Hospital. You are true angels. We are also grateful to the staff at Tuxedo Villa for their excellent care of Mom over the past two years. In addition, our sincere thanks to Carl and Maureen Takats who watched over Mom with loving care while she lived in her Charleswood apartment. Major Doris, thank you for your kind words that helped comfort Mom. A memorial service will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 12, 2014. The family will be greeting friends and relatives at a reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the Salvation Army. I am sorry to read of Mrs. Harrington's passing. Your mother was a former patient of mine at the Boyd Building. We used to share a giggle in private during her visits--my office receptionist was always very excited to see which "handsome" son was going to escort her to the office. Your mom was so proud and laughed each time!! Our paths crossed again when my mother lived at Tuxedo VIlla until March of 2013. It was so nice to see a smiling face when we greeted your mother as my mother and I walked the halls. I reminded Vera of our past--she giggled again. My condolences. Rest in peace Mrs. Harrington. We shared many good times and lots of laughs at Pat & Mariette's on Sumter Crescent. Vera had a great sense of humour and will be missed by all who knew her. May she rest in peace. Love to all the family. - Posted by: Ken % Joan Ranick (Friends of Pat & Mariettte's) on: Apr 09, 2014
