WILLIAM (BILL) HAROLD MELNYK March 12, 1930 - April 11, 2014 Bill spent his early years near Arborg, Manitoba. He often reminisced with his sidekick and dear sister Nettie about growing up on the farm. He married Florence in 1955 and they raised two children: Darryl and Tanis. Bill adored his grandchildren Annalise and Carl and was so proud of their accomplishments. He will also be missed by his daughter-in-law Lois and many other family and friends, especially his nieces and nephews who knew him affectionately as "Uncle Bill". After retirement Bill was able to enjoy travel and new pastimes. We are thankful that he had this time to discover his gift of creativity through woodcarving, and enjoy his love of nature by spending time at the lake and in his yard, gardening and walking with Florence. He took up golf and became an accomplished golfer as well. As a lover of birds, Bill always looked forward to the first robin each spring. We were happy to tell him his robin returned to his backyard the day before he died. Bill was happiest being with his family, especially Florence, whom for 60 years, he was seldom without. Our family spent many summers at our favourite place, West Hawk Lake. Grandpa was a wonderful story teller with wisdom and infectious laughter. He was known by all as a gentle, kind, humble and hardworking man. He was a friend to everyone he met because of his genuine interest and enjoyment in people. His love, encouragement and commitment to his family were unwavering. Bill was surrounded with his loving family during his stay at Grace General Hospital. He appreciated everyone who provided his care and everything that they did for him. Thank you. If desired, donations in his memory can be made to CancerCare Manitoba. Bill was very grateful for their kindness and support. A celebration of Bill's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on April 17, 2014 at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Avenue. Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • My deepest condolences to the family. May God embrace all of you during this difficult time. Keep his memories alive, and in your heart always. Peace and Love to all. - Posted by: Terri Favel (co-worker) on: Apr 17, 2014

  • Bill's son Darryl has been my friend since university days. I always enjoyed stopping off to hear some wise words from Bill before Darryl and I headed out hunting or on other adventures. Bill and Florence did fine by passing along their best qualities to their wonderful son and daughter. A robin will not be able to pass without bringing thoughts of this kind hearted gentleman to many of us that knew him. - Posted by: Rick Grabowecky (Friend of Darryl) on: Apr 17, 2014

  • I am sorry to hear of Bill's passing and I will very much miss Bill and his wife Florence who I meet at the mall, walking at Polo Park. I hope Florence will still walk at the mall if she can so we can still chat. - Posted by: Doug Black (Friend) on: Apr 15, 2014

  • I worked alongside Bill's daughter, Tanis for many years. She, and her two children, Annalise and Carl loved their dad/grandfather dearly. A very close-knit loving family....my heart goes out to you and all your family at this difficult time....may the special memories that you hold in your heart ease your pain and gently bring comfort to your heart dear friend. - Posted by: Verna Adolf (friend/colleague of Tanis) on: Apr 15, 2014
