MARY ROMANIUK July 10, 1911 - April 15, 2014 It's with sadness and fullness that Mary's life on earth has ended. After completing a full life of 102 years, we will miss her dearly and treasure the memories and qualities we so admire. She was born July 10, 1911 in the town of Lockport. Her father and mother wanting a better life emigrated from Ukraine to Manitoba and secured a plot of land near Lockport. After Mary and her two sisters, Rose and Anne, completed high school education, they, with their mother moved to Winnipeg, eventually to their house which she called her little palace. During the depression she never remained idle, starting work as a young sales lady. Later after successfully completing a secretarial course, she worked at Burns Packing Plant, at Fort Osborne Barracks, and finally to the Federal Government in the Immigration sector and lastly as confidant secretary in the Secretary of State office. Mary attended Presbyterian church and later Elim Chapel and also had great interest in the outreach work of Salem Community Bible Church and many other Christian ministries. During her career, Mary with her sisters and friends became accomplished travelers across Canada, United States, England, Europe, Australia, Japan and other Asian countries. After the passing of Mary's sisters, she remained in her home which she treated as a present and sanctuary expressing thanks to God for such an abode. Over the years, she assisted many people. But for everything she accomplished, Mary desired to express thanks to Jesus Christ, who she accepted early in her life as her personal Saviour. She was deeply grateful for the compassionate care she received from friends and devoted Home Care workers. A special thanks to the staff on 5A at St. Boniface Hospital for the excellent care. A celebration of life for Mary will be held at 10:00 a.m., April 23, 2014 at Chapel lawn, 4000 Portage Ave. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. www.chapellawn.ca 885-9715

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I knew the three sisters in the early seventies and was one of many they "adopted" (took an interest in). Rose, the youngest Sister, and I both went to Norwood Presbyterian Church. I remember suppers and evening in their home over the years, always fun and interesting. When persons came through on holdidays they would open up their home for an evening or two for those who knew these people to be able to come and vist. They were great supporters of the Congregations they belonged to with their time and tithes. When I got married they insisted on coming to help clean the house we were moving into. Loved the all three dearly and they were each different from the other and now their ministry/calling is over. It is sad to know it is an end and yet everyone knows they will be with the Lord. - Posted by: Shirley MacIver nee Cayley (Friend ) on: Apr 22, 2014

  • Mary Romaniak has been a member of our Elim Congregation for many years. My husband and I, along with our adult children remember the interest she expressed in each one of us. We will remember her sweetness and her faithful prayers. She would pray for us, and for our now adult children, through both difficult and good times. We will miss her and all feel a deep sense of gratitude for the life she lived and for her prayer support. - Posted by: Garvin and Elvy Pierce (Friend) on: Apr 22, 2014

  • Two of my Aunts who have since passed away were very close friends of Mary and her sisters from the time that they were very young women. I remember Mary and Rose camping in a small tent at Clear Lake and joining my Aunts and our family for picnic suppers on the North Shore of the Lake during the summers of 1960. One time Mary spent a week in my parents cabin in the Clear Lake Seasonal Campground with my Aunt Dorothey, my cousin and me when we were very young teenage girls. Our behaviour at times must have been challenging to these two single middle aged women, but they were always very patient and kind, probably remembering their summers here in the 1940s dancing with the Air crew of the British Common Wealth Air Training Plan. I remember "Auntie Mary" telling us how much happier Auntie Dorothey would be if we would wear our sweaters so that she could know that we were warm. She was so gentle and sweet always thinking of what was best to do so that everyone would be happy. I will always remember and treasure my memories of her. - Posted by: MARILYN MUTTER (niece of two very close friends of "the Romaniuk girls") on: Apr 21, 2014
