Condolences & Memories (44 entries)

  • I was looking up something on Linwood School and much to my surprise and sadness, Drew's obituary came up in the listings. Although this is a little late in coming my condolences to the Doyle family. With the 100th Anniversary of the Linwood School Reunion a year behind us, seeing Byron and many of the old gang; I was struck then at how the bonds of childhood, neighbourhood ties, and growing up are like no other. - Posted by: Julie Medlicott (Deer Lodge Girl) on: Dec 28, 2014

  • First of all, I want to offer my sincerest sympathy to Bev, Pat, Byron, Maureen and families. As you know, Drew was a big part of my summers as a kid and teenager, and I grew very fond of the Doyle family. It has taken me a while to post a tribute for you, my old friend. I try not to do anything in life that might cause me regret, but sadly, not getting together with you for drinks and laughs at Sandy Hook one summer day on my vacation is one of them. I said to my husband last summer, after we bumped into you in Gimli, “I haven’t seen Drew for years; I’ll have to call him and we’ll all go for coffee – you’ll like him.” I’ve told Hannon all about my childhood friend and the fun we had playing as kids at Sandy Hook and later just hanging out with you and your friends at the golf course and “Electric Banana”. OMG! we could have been a part of “That 70’s Show”. I even have an odd appreciation for some of the more “unusual” music !! You were fun to grow up with, Drew. See ya one day. - Posted by: Lorraine Andree (Summertime Friend !) on: May 26, 2014

  • Drew and I met playing darts, against each other at the Las Vegas Open years ago. The friendship that grew out of that encounter was, is, cherished. We ended up playing as partners in several Vegas Open's and traveled together to Saskatoon for the Golden Harvest tournaments in years gone by. That's when we discovered we both loved golf and Drew joined our Myrtle Beach golf adventures each October for more than the past 15 years. What times we had together. We visited each other, I in Sandy Hook, he in Ely, MN where we played his course and my course (The Wilderness at Fortune Bay) and shared some of the best times, best meals, and best beverages one could ask for. I know all the guys on our annual Myrtle Beach golf adventure will miss Drew greatly and our trips will never be the same without him! I will miss my friend immensely. He enriched my life. I was fortunate to meet his brothers Pat and Bryon when Drew and I played Sandy Hook and ate burgers in the new club house. Drew and I shared time in the 'Butler' garage where he re-gripped my clubs with only the best. The memories I have with Drew will remain as long as I live and I regret that we will never be able to make more together in this life. I extend my most sincere condolences to all his family and many friends. - Posted by: Jay Tomlinson (Friend) on: May 01, 2014

  • Drew My Friend it took my a while to gather my thoughts. We played Junior golf together (although not that well lol) although always enjoyed each others company, The Electric Banana, in the early days, golf at the 9 hole course, matches against you and Porteous, not sure if I ever won one! Finally the 18 hole golf course! "The Home of Champions", where we shared many years together in the summer. I was there to witness your "hole in one" a 8 iron I believe on the 15th! The Butler garage where you shared with me your knowledge of golf club repair! No one told a joke like you! now a lost art, The Final Jimmy Doyle Memorial where you led our team to a play-off Victory. On #10 first play-off hole against skinny's team!!.. the 2nd shot you had a 7 Iron in your hands a wee wind in your face. I said stick it and lets go have Pint!! and you did put it with in 5 feet and went on to victory! You were one reason I bought a cabin up at the "Home of Champions" my friend! I promise never to forget you!.. you will be deeply missed by family and friends Your Friend always Tommy My Deepest Condolences to the Doyle Family - Posted by: Tommy Luce (Friend) on: Apr 28, 2014

  • Just the other day I was remarking about how playing darts with Drew always improved my game. He would never let me win, mind you, but I sure played better. It's been years since I last saw him, but I will always remember that laugh and his razor wit. It's a sad day, now. Good bye, Drew. - Posted by: Wally Landreth (old friend) on: Apr 25, 2014

  • OUR DEEPEST CONDOLENCES TO THE DOYLE FAMILY FOR THEIR LOSS. DREW WILL SURELY BE MISSED AT THE CLUB HOUSE. - Posted by: LLOYD AND PHYLLIS COTTES (FRIEND) on: Apr 25, 2014

  • Ah Drew. Where to start? so many memories...and not nearly enough time or space to share them. The early years hanging out at your cottage (the Electric Banana) at the old 9 hole course...getting to play the course only when Jumbo determined it was all clear and ok, Jumbo storming over from the old pro shop and greeting us as we came down the old 3rd hole ("get off the course...big guys like you...holding up the paying golfers!). Yikes never thought we'd play again...then a few hours later Jumbo sending word over to come over for burgers.."I'm sure you boys are hungry". All the memories from the many year of annual S.H.I.T. tournaments...too many to get into. But most importantly your quick wit and story telling. Unmatched. Only got to see you once or twice a year recently but those times were always memorable. I will miss you my friend. My sincere condolences to Mrs. Doyle, Pat, Byron, and Maureen. and families. If a man is judged by the friends he makes in his life, then Drew your life was full. You will be missed. - Posted by: Ken Sims (EA) (Friend) on: Apr 25, 2014

  • Drew was always so much fun to be around (just like Dad Jumbo). Our prayers go out to Bev, Pat, Byron and Maureen.ZLPPJB - Posted by: Cindy, Greg and Gary Whyte (former Sandy Hook neighbours) on: Apr 24, 2014

  • Drew and I were close friends and golfing partners for 45 years. Some of my favourite times with Drew would be when he would invite me over, or I'd invite myself over, to his workshop, which we nicknamed, the "Butler" garage. He would be re-gripping some clubs and would walk over to his stereo and start playing some of that "cowboy sh**" he was famous for, John Prine, Steve Goodman, Jerry Jeff Walker. Then he would challenge me to a game of darts. I would accept knowing full well what would happen. He was good. I throw darts like I'm throwing a baseball. He would let me have a commanding lead. Then, in dart-speak, he would make some kind of double triple on-the-number combination to win. And then, he would give me the look. I would always say, "You always were smarter than me." And he would say, "Major Work," because he skipped a grade in elementary school. And then we'd laugh and laugh and laugh. Damn, I will miss that laugh. Drew was a very private person. However, if I went to his place or he came to our place to watch a hockey game, sometimes he would open up. I can tell you he loved his family. He was so proud that they were able to fulfill his mom & dad's vision of an 18-hole resort golf course complete with a full facility clubhouse. He was especially proud of the accomplishments of his nieces and nephews as they grew up and he was looking forward to Ty returning to school before taking on more responsibilities at the course. Drew never showed a lot of emotion, but I know he was devastated by the tragic death of his Corrie last year. And last, his mother meant more to him than she will ever know. Drew, I will miss you like a brother. Save me a place in your foursome. - Posted by: Ken Porteous (Friend) on: Apr 24, 2014

  • I first met Drew when the three local Junior Highs merged into SJCI. Our relationship was about friendly banter tinged with just a bit of sarcasm. Our paths crossed consistently though not regularly. Often when in the SH area I'd think that I should drop by and say hi to Drew then something would come up and I'd say to myself...next time. Now there can be no next time and that makes me sad. My condolences to the Doyle Family and Drew's many friends. - Posted by: Jim Fogg (Friend) on: Apr 23, 2014

  • My condolences to the Doyle Family. Our family moved to St. James in 1967 and the Doyle's were always a friendly welcoming bunch. I hung around with Drew a bit at University and had some good times, especially when he was holding court. He was a sincere person and always took time to check out how things were going when we crossed paths. Rob Bjarnason - Posted by: Rob Bjarnason (Friend) on: Apr 22, 2014

  • Not really sure what to say, so many fond memories of Drew . I will never walk into the clubhouse again or even drive by the course without thinking of Drew, maybe that’s enough. Mrs. Doyle, By, Pat and Maureen will love you always, deepest sympathies. - Posted by: Larry Pearson (Family friend) on: Apr 22, 2014

  • Drew, life without you here will not be the same. You will be forever missed but never forgotten. Your exchange of your sometimes quirky music with Ken will be missed. The kids would often say," what kinda of music is that dad? Oh, something Drew gave me." Your CD's from our latest road trip will be cherished. To the Doyle family my deepest condolences. Life here will never be the same. - Posted by: Bobbie, long time friend (Friend) on: Apr 22, 2014

  • Drew was a long time friend of my father Jim. my whole family has fond memories of Drew at the golf course and hearing his stories of his winters away. Drew stood in on behalf of my father when he passed, its true that the good people are taken away from us far too soon. Thoughts are with the Doyle family during their hard time. The golf course will not be the same without Drew!! The McDonald family. - Posted by: Mike McDonald (Sandy Hook golf course resident/ Golfer) on: Apr 22, 2014

  • My deepest sympathies to Bev, Pat, Byron, Maureen and families. Drew and I reconnected upon my return from living in B.C. in 1977. What followed was 2 years as roommates going to university, 35 years of hockey drafts and golf matches and countless jokes and laughs. He had without question one of the sharpest wits I have ever encountered. Although we only got together 3 or 4 times a year we managed to make the most of those moments. Goodbye my friend. It was a privilege to know you and I will miss you immensely. - Posted by: Jeff Colpitts (Friend) on: Apr 22, 2014

  • Drew was a lifelong friend - we knew each other since childhood. So many of my fondest memories are linked to his goofy smile and quicksilver wit. We didn't stay in close contact through adulthood, but those times when I would fly in from PEI to visit my folks in Gimli I would try to stop by the Hook and say Hi. For a guy who wasn't a huge part of my life anymore, his passing leaves a giant crater ... - Posted by: Nils Ling (friend) on: Apr 22, 2014

  • I have fond memories of Drew from our days on Winchester and Deer Lodge. He used to come and hang out with me when I worked at Watson's bowling ally, he loved climbing on the machines and helped me fix them. One summer Drew, Bob Gorrell and myself would sneak off early and hop on the old train that used to go up to Grand Beach, we would spend the day there and get back to town before our families knew what we had been up to, we did this six or seven times over the summer. His humor kept us all laughing, I am glad that however briefly he was a friend. - Posted by: David (Ken) Chalmers (Friend) on: Apr 22, 2014

  • I am so very sorry to hear of Drew's passing. He made me feel welcome as a new member at the golf course and always had a warm greeting. He once opened the club house for Deb and me in the middle of winter so we could buy a gift certificate for our Christmas Sandy Hook teddy bear. I will miss him. My thoughts and prayers to all his family. - Posted by: Judy Hill (Sandy Hook friend) on: Apr 21, 2014

  • As an old friend of Drew's going way back to early school years, I am shocked and deeply saddened to hear of his recent passing. It is hard to even imagine a Sandy Hook without Drew. Always quick with a joke or astute observation, Drew will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Among the many things that Drew enjoyed was the wit and wisdom of humorists who gave us memorable one-liners. Regarding funerals, Drew always liked Yogi Berra's message which was " You should always go to other people's funerals,,, otherwise they won't come to yours". Ah Drew, you will be missed my friend. - Posted by: Bill Fulton (Friend) on: Apr 21, 2014
