PETER EDWARDS May 12, 1925 - April 21, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Peter on Monday, April 21, 2014, at the Victoria Hospital. Peter was born in Marlborough, England on May 12, 1925. He immigrated to Canada with his parents and three elder siblings in 1927 where they settled in St. Brides, Alberta. During the Second World War from 1943 to 1945, he served with the Royal Canadian Air Force stationed in England. He met his beloved Margaret in Edmonton in 1947 and they were married in 1949. Their marriage was blessed with ten children. Peter's family will always be so grateful for the loving care he gave Margaret as her health declined. Peter was a devoted and generous husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many. Peter leaves to cherish his memory his children, Maureen Kuntz, Maryellen Edwards, Valerie Edwards (Philippe Mailhot), Jim Edwards, Kevin Edwards (Sandi), Barbara Bell, Mark Edwards (Suzan Hassan); his grandchildren, Michelle Edwards, Teresa Fingland (Sean), Scott Kuntz (Aynsley), Jacob, Stephen and Matthew Bell, Paul Mailhot (Kathleen McClinton), Danielle and Alyse Mailhot, Alixe Edwards and Kelly Edwards; his great-grandchildren, Joey and Megan Fingland, and Tyson and Spencer Kuntz. He is also survived by his sister Judy Van Dyke, his sisters-in-law Gwen Edwards, Lois Edwards and Margaret Edwards. Peter had a special place in his heart for all his relatives in the Edwards and Stanton extended families. Peter has joined in heaven his beloved wife Margaret (2005), twin daughters Margaret and Mary (1953) and son Michael (2003), along with his parents Charles and Hermina, his brothers and sisters Robert, Alan, Marie Louise, John, Michael, Margaret and Georgina. Following his return to Canada after his military service, Peter worked for Canada Packers in Edmonton until 1949. He then began a decades long career with the Canadian Grain Commission in Edmonton, Calgary and finally Winnipeg as a grain inspector where he rose to the position of Chairman of the Grain Appeal Tribunal for Western Canada. After his retirement from the Grain Commission in 1992, he was contracted by Saskatchewan Wheat Pool where he continued his work in grain inspection. He remained with Sask Pool for several harvest seasons in Winnipeg and Regina until he finally retired at the age of 77. Throughout these years, Peter and Margaret enjoyed traveling as well as spending nine wonderful winters in Mesa, Arizona where they made many lasting friendships. As Peter would say, he had "dual-citizenship" at both St. Ignatius and St. John Brebeuf Parishes, and served in many ministries. He was also involved in the Knights of Columbus and Darjeeling Mission Club. Peter was active in his community as well; he was a hockey coach, scout leader, St. James Industries board member and community club volunteer. Inspired by his son Michael, Peter was a passionate supporter of the Association for Community Living. He was one of the founding members of the Canoe-a-thon. He was a major fundraiser as a participant in both the Canoe-a-thon and Manitoba Marathon for more than 30 years. During that time, he also inspired many others to follow in his footsteps. Peter had unlimited energy and would often declare, "It's a go day!" Over the years Peter's hobbies have included camping, hiking, golfing and baseball. He was famous for his homemade bread and buns and loved giving them away as much as he loved baking them. He was an avid gardener and was particularly proud of his support network of hockey sticks and chicken wire that helped to produce his Canada A1 tomatoes. In the last few years a good week for Peter would include five outings for bridge and three days of baking buns. For anyone who knew Peter, it was clear that his faith and his family were the most important gifts of his life. He was a source of strength and support for all who knew him and was always able to make each of his family members and friends feel welcome and special. He always had a joke or two and lots of wisdom and advice. Peter's family extends their sincere thanks to the staff at the Victoria Hospital for their excellent care. Donations in Peter's memory may be made to the Manitoba Marathon Foundation, 4-1080 Waverly Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3T 5S4. "God's garden must be beautiful He always takes the best" Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church, Stafford Street at Corydon Avenue, on Monday, April 28, 2014 at 11:00. Uncle Pete has always had a special place in my heart and in my memories and I know this is also true for the entire Calgary based Edwards clan. My mother Lois Edwards also sends her love and condolences to the family. She asked me to make note of what a special man her brother-in-law was and how much she enjoyed staying connected through their regular telephone conversations. Although I cannot make it to the funeral tomorrow I will take some time at 11 am to be thinking of Uncle Pete and his wonderful family. - Posted by: Don Edwards (Nephew) on: Apr 27, 2014

  • Please pass along my condolences to all the family of Peter Edwards. He was a true gift to our family; I have many fond memories of him. I know I'll never eat another tomato without thinking of him; he always told me how large and ripe his were and they were always ready ahead of mine. It is with faith, that I believe, he is with all of our loved ones, gone before us. They are now together, at peace, singing with the angels. It is with deep regret that I cannot attend the celebration of such a great man's life, but know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. • To the family of Peter Edwards: Rick and Janie Bevilacqua of Thunder Bay wish to express our sincere condolences on the death of Peter. I met Peter at the CGC when we moved from Thunder Bay to Winnipeg in 1983. I spent many days working with Peter at many locations on the prairies. I often travelled with him to many fairs and conventions. He was a wealth of information, and was considered a walking grain encyclopaedia by those that knew him. On one of those trips to Brandon, one funny story comes to mind; Peter would bring his own cooler on these trips and would take a block of ice in an ice cream pail, to help keep the milk cold for his breakfast. We were there overnight, and the next morning, he noticed that the contents of the cooler were warm. He asked me if I wanted some ice cream for breakfast? By mistake, he had taken a pail of ice cream instead of ice. - Posted by: Rick Bevilacqua (Friend, co worker) on: Apr 25, 2014

  • I have never met Peter, but have found a kindred spirit in his granddaughter, Danielle. We are both in our first year of teaching, only two rooms away. Peter's influence shines in his granddaughter - she shows a high degree of empathy, she works hard, she stands up for what she believes in and has an excellent sense of humour - she is a dear friend. Witnessing a dear friend cope with loss is heartbreaking. It is clear to me that Danielle thought highly of her grandfather and strived to perpetuate his beliefs. This being said, I will accompany Danielle in walking/running the race that Peter held so dearly. it will be my pleasure to support such an important cause and raise funds in Peter's memory. I offer my sincere condolences to Peter's fiends and family, may his light shine forever in your hearts. - Posted by: Sarah Jane Maynard (Friend and Coworker of Peter's Granddaughter) on: Apr 24, 2014
