DORA GROEN
Born: Oct 23, 1933
Date of Passing: Apr 25, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDORA GROEN On Friday, April 25, 2014 Mom joined Baba and Gido, sister Mary and brothers-in-law Robert and Metro. She passed away at peace and without pain, surrounded by her immediate family. Left to celebrate her life and with the fondest of memories are her sister Katherine, husband Dick, children Derek (Deanne), Richard (Ann), Charlotte (Jeff), and grandchildren Jeremy (Linn), Raymond (Kasia), Kyle, Benjamin, Nicholas, Riley, Brendan and great-grandchildren Eve and Rayce, and nephew John and niece Gloria. Mom will always be remembered for her kindness, and love of and pride in family. Born October 23, 1933 in Whitebeech, Saskatchewan, she left home at 14 to find her way in the world. She met Dad in 1961 and six months later, on May 26, 1962 they married in Calgary. Derek was born a prompt nine months later in Calgary, followed fifteen months later by Richard in Benito, then Charlotte another year later in Winnipeg. In June 1971 they moved to Ile Des Chenes where a garden could monopolize the yard and provide them with endless evenings and weekends filled with toiled joy. Mom would continue to expand her culinary skills to include Asian and other food groups, a full Ukrainian Christmas dinner, and a variety of Dutch dishes with only the occasional misstep (like green tomato pie, but thankfully there was always a sufficient supply of ice cream). She returned to the workforce in the late 1970s and continued until she joined Dad in retirement in 1995. Eventually, the limitations imposed by age compelled them to move to Winnipeg where they could be closer to family and more easily meet their daily necessities. She spent her final days at St. Boniface Hospital in very good cheer and humour, embracing every measure taken to address her issues with a positive outlook while recognizing that the end could also come. The family wishes to express their profoundest gratitude to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital - particularly the minute by minute care provided by those in the cardiac care unit - who made her final days hopeful but realistic, pleasant if not happy, and most importantly pain free. There will be no formal service. For those wishing to say farewell, viewing will be on Thursday, May 1, 2014 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association. www.chapellawn.ca 885-9715
