KATHLEEN MAUDE AHERNE
Date of Passing: Apr 23, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryKATHLEEN MAUDE AHERNE Peacefully on April 23, 2014 Kathleen (Kay) passed away after a short illness at the Victoria General Hospital. Kay was predeceased by her beloved husband Edward (Ed), their only daughter Elizabeth and granddaughter Joanne. Kay is survived by her nieces and nephews in Winnipeg and her loving grandchildren in Vancouver. They remember fondly her Yorkshire pudding and roast beef and her famous shepherd's pie. Her humour, feisty political commentary and opinions always generated heated discussion any time of the day. Grandma Kay was a force to be reckoned with. Kay was born in England in 1926 and came to Canada as a young war bride and mother to Elizabeth. The family lived in other Canadian cities over the years, settling in Winnipeg for good. Kay lovingly cared for Ed during his struggle with ALS until he died in 1993. Kay often spoke of her fond memories of visiting family back in England, as well as all the fun times with the Aherne family in Winnipeg. In healthier years, Kay and Ed loved visiting their family in Vancouver. Kay and Ed were devoted volunteers at the Victoria Hospital for many years. Kay continued on after Ed's passing and just last year was honoured at a Volunteer Appreciation event. Riverwood Square has been home for Kay since 2008. She truly loved living there, thanks to the caring, patience and kindness shown her by the staff there. The family is thankful for the friendship Kay enjoyed at Riverwood; you are very special people. Thank you also, to the staff of 5 South at the Victoria Hospital for making her last days peaceful. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in the St. Vital Catholic Church on Friday, May 9, 2014 at 2:00 p.m., with interment to follow. If desired donations in Kay's memory may be made to the Victoria Hospital Foundation, 2340 Pembina Hwy., Winnipeg, MB, R3T 9Z9. Irish Blessing May the road rise up to meet you; May the wind be always at your back; May the sun shine warm upon your face; And rains fall soft upon your fields; And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
