SONNIHILD QUATEMBER (nee WEGNER) Beloved wife, mother, sister and grandmother. Sonnihild Frieda Kathe Quatember of Winnipeg, in her 78th year, died peacefully at Concordia Hospital on the morning of April 28, 2014. She had been well supported during her hospital stay by her loving family, and by the caring staff of the hospital. Sonny was born on October 20, 1935 in Glauchau, Germany, to Walter and Katherina (Naumann) Wegner. Her big brothers Lothar and Eckhart influenced her adventurous side. She grew up with a love of downhill skiing in the Black Forest, and was an accomplished Seamstress (by trade) and Pastry Chef. In 1965, Sonny met a handsome young man named Max Quatember and they were married in Karlsruhe, Germany. They started their adventure together by moving to Canada in 1967. They purchased a home in Winnipeg, and raised their sons Andy and Oliver. In 1973, Max and Sonny bought a cottage with a beautiful lakefront view near Minaki, Ontario. Sonny enjoyed life at the cottage; planting trees and flowers, sunning herself by the dock and watching her sons learn to water-ski. As the family expanded in later years, she also introduced her two grandsons to loving the cottage life. It was a great joy for Sonny to bake for her family and especially for her grandsons at Christmas. She would fill the tables with pastries, cakes and cookies. Sonny was predeceased by her parents Walter and Katharina, and her brother Lothar. She is survived by her husband Max, her son Andy and his wife Elizabeth, her son Oliver (Nik) and his wife Kathryn, and her special grandsons Mal and Logan, her brother Eckhart, her sister-in-law Lieselotte, and numerous nieces and nephews. Service to take place on Friday, May 9, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home, Hwy 1 East at Navin Road. GREEN ACRES Funeral Home and Cemetery (204) 222-3241 Condolences may be sent to www.greenacresfuneralhome.com
