Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGERTRUDE DAISY PINDER (HUNT) Peacefully on May 5, 2014 at St. Norbert Personal Care Home, Gertie Pinder, 97, passed away with family at her side. Gertie will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her children, Pearl (Doug) Miller, Bud, Edith (Tom) Checkley, brothers Reg and Stew Clayton as well as eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Gertie was predeceased by her loving husband Alfred, parents, stepfather, brothers Charles and Ferris Hunt, and sister Martha Fill. Gertie was born March 27, 1917 in the Thornhill area to Harry and Mary Hunt. In 1920, after losing their father in 1918, the family moved to the Clayton farm at Kaleida. Mom attended both Kaleida and Overdale one-room schools before going out to work after she finished grade eight. November 1, 1934 Mom married Alf Pinder. Together they survived the 1930s with their lives revolving around family, friends and the community. In 1952 Mom and Dad moved to Winnipeg. Never one to sit idle, Mom found a new job and became an independent business owner. Life was never dull - working during the week and farming every weekend. A fractured hip in 2005 necessitated a move to Sterling House then in April 2011 to St. Norbert. At 97 years of age she was still walking to and from the dining room with her walker! Mom, your smile could light up a room! Our family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at St. Norbert Personal Care Home for your care and compassion - you always brought a smile to Mom's face. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Gertie's life will take place at Chapel Lawn, Saturday, May 10, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. If so desired, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6. My name is Al McGilligan. Son of James McGilligan. My Dad and Alf were friends. Alf and Gertie came to Ontario, Canada for my wedding in 1975. They were both very nice. I don't know if the Ted mentioned on here is the Ted I knew when me and my mom Kate visited many years ago. I do have a picture of Alf and Gertie from back in the sixties. When we heard about Aunty Gertie passing we were truly saddened.No words can bring true comfort at this difficult time,but know that we're thinking of you.. My condolences to the family. It was good to meet Edith with her at St Norbert Nursing home one day when a group from TUC was having a short meditation and visit with the residents. Glad you introduced me to your Mom. Although that was my only connection, it was good to see her smile when we saw her during our monthly visits. She always seemed so gracious.
