FRANK WARKENTIN With hearts full of love but heavy sadness we said goodbye to Frank Warkentin, 84, of Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 7, 2014. He died with family at his side. Besides his wife Ruth, he is survived by three children, Loraine Toews, Esther (Willie) Klassen and Julianne (Brad) Dick; grandchildren Stephanie (Kelly) Greenslade, Justin Toews, Julene (Jay) Dewis, Tiphanie (Wally) Kroeker, Janalee (Chris) Bell, Zacharie (Melodie) Klassen, Jenessa Dick and Braden (MacKenzie) Dick; and his ten great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his son Frankie and son-in-law David Toews. He was born to the late Franz and Katharina Warkentin on August 12, 1929 in Lustigastal, Krimia, Russia. After fleeing Krimea via Poland and Germany, Frank and his mother arrived in Canada in 1948. He lived and worked in Winkler and then in Winnipeg, where he met his wife and life partner, Ruth Hajer. They were married on July 26, 1952. In 1953, Frank and Ruth moved to Newton where they spent many years jointly owning Newton Enterprises, investing in the church and community, and enjoying time with family. In their retirement years, they lived in Portage la Prairie and Winnipeg. Ruth was his love and his soul mate, which was evident until his last days. Their love has left an indelible imprint on their daughters and on family and friends. His incredible love for his wife was only matched by the love he had for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will live on through them. The family expresses sincere thanks to the staff at Concordia Place. He felt genuinely cared for by the staff and spoke often of his appreciation for them. A viewing will be held Saturday, May 10, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. with a devotional at 7:15 p.m. at Friends Funeral Service at 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg. A private family memorial will be planned for a later date. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society, Concordia Place Care Centre, or a charity of one's choice.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • Frank was a relative, fellow traveler, interested in building the church in Tschongrav, Crimea. The original church was started by relatives of the village: Hueberts, Wiens, Warkentin and others in 1912. The church was closed by the Communists, but in 2005 Frank was part in re-opening that village church again through the work of DMI and MB Missions. - Posted by: Gerhard & Selma Enns (Gerhard, cousin to Frank) on: May 17, 2014

  • Our father is on the same floor as your mom and dad were. He was always one we stopped to talk to and we would go in and say hi to your mom. I remember looking at her pictures and saw one of our relatives on her pictures. So thankful that at least he is now home and we will see him some day again. Sorry for your loss - Posted by: Tammy () on: May 10, 2014

  • Frank was a very pleasant gentleman. His beautiful smile is already missed! He was a kind soul. - Posted by: (Caregiver) on: May 09, 2014

  • Dear Lorraine, Esther and Julie, I was sad to note the death of your dad. He was always a very quiet, and "Gentle" Man, as I remember him. So sorry for your loss but it must be a comfort to know that Frankie will be so glad to see his dad again, after all these years. Kind thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. - Posted by: Debbie Smith (Friend) on: May 09, 2014

  • Our sincerest sympathy. To all the family. It has been a long time since we have seen you all. May memories be a comfort. - Posted by: Steve and Norma Einarson () on: May 09, 2014

  • So sorry we will not be able to come to the viewing on Saturday. We will be out of town. We would love to see you all to give you our condolences. Your family has touched ours in so many ways, and Through Mom and Dad, Henry and Mary Wiebe, we have always gotten news and prayer requests. May you feel God's comfort during this time and in the years to come. all our love, Herb and Linda - Posted by: Herb and Linda Wiebe (Herb's relative) on: May 09, 2014

  • Frank was influential in my life through his dedication and commitment to the Sunday School Mission at the one room Curtis School. He still remembered me six months ago. I will be eternally grateful for those years of giving and sharing on his part and am confident he has now heard WELL DONE MY GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT.
