DR. GEORGE BERTRAM WATKINS April 3, 1924 May 28, 2014 After a courageous battle with cancer it is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle and friend, Bert, in the Palliative Care of St. Boniface General Hospital. A memorial service will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. In his memory any donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba or the Children's Hospital. DR. GEORGE BERTRAM WATKINS April 3, 1924 - May 28, 2014 After a courageous battle with cancer it is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle and friend, Bert, in the Palliative Care of St. Boniface Hospital at 7:15 a.m. Bert was predeceased by his beloved parents Clarence and Ruby Watkins, siblings Marjorie, Vera, Gladys and Alan, brothers-in-law Mas, Sid and Ray Nagamori, Richard Oye and Bruce Hashimoto. Bert is survived by his dear wife Mary (nee Nagamori), sons James (Angela) and Ronald, grandson Christopher, and stepdaughter Sylvia (Harold) Wetzel, all of Germany; in-laws Tad Nagamori, Ruby Oye, Faye Hashimoto, Lily (Toru) Hosaki, Aster Nagamori, Bette Nagamori, and many nieces and nephews in Canada and Australia. Bert was born in Hamilton Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia on April 3, 1924 the fifth child of Clarence and Ruby Watkins. He graduated in May 1947 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Sydney, working at Sydney Hospitals and the Royal Hobart Hospital in Tasmania. In 1951 he moved on to the European countries working in Genoa, Austria, Trieste, Bremen and Rome. In 1960 he decided to specialize in radiology and moved to London working at St. Bartholomew's Hospital for five years. In February 1965 he accepted a position as radiologist for the Manitoba XRAY Clinic where he worked for 25 years until his retirement in 1989. Bert met Mary (nee Nagamori), a radiographer at this practice, and they married in February 1971. A special thank you to niece Marjorie Taylor, Australia and son Ronald, Bremen, Germany for coming to Winnipeg over the past several months to help with the care of Bert and Mary, and to sister-in-law Faye Hashimoto for her great support.
