BERTHA MAY ALYEA The family of Bertha May Alyea announces her passing on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at the age of 98 years. Bertha was born in St. Boniface, MB on February 8, 1916 and lived her entire life there. Bertha was very proud of her bilingualism and her achievements at an early age having competed for top honours in the French program at her school. She always said it was her ability to speak fluently that enabled her to achieve employment with the Federal Government. Prior to that, Bertha was an employee at the Eaton's Store on Portage Avenue. She also spoke of her work during the war, particularly with the Navy, which was quite valiant but also very heart breaking for her personally in losing so many loved ones. Through her determination and hard work, Bertha had the opportunity to travel around the world. She loved to see new places with her special "travel" group friends and she had wonderful stories to share of her adventures. She loved music and she loved to dance. She participated and attended social events in St. Boniface, especially Festival du Voyageur, which she said was always a wonderful time of celebration. Bertha was a member of the Hong Kong Veterans' Commemorative Association, Canada and also a member of the Federal Superannuates National Association having worked with Revenue Canada for over 33 years. Over the years she also volunteered her time with various local associations and groups. Bertha enjoyed the company of family with nieces and nephews visiting from Thunder Bay including her niece Marlene and Gerald Cole and Carol (Cookie) Cella. She is survived by her niece Carol Cella (Bill) of Thunder Bay and nephew John Lendrum of Winnipeg, Yvette Cuillerier of Montreal, PQ. She is survived by other relatives including several grand and great-grand-nieces and nephews. Bertha was predeceased by her parents, brother Pete and sisters Minnie and Irene, as well as other relatives.
