Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWINNIFRED MARGARET WALKER 1922 - 2014 Peacefully, on Monday, June 2, 2014, Winnifred passed away at the age of 91 years at the Grace Hospital. Those left to cherish her memory are her sons: Stephen (Lisa), their children Jesse and Kirsten of Calgary, AB; Michael of Winnipeg, MB; Philip (Janice) and their children Taryn and Alison of Calgary, AB. Winnifred was predeceased by her beloved husband of 55 years, George, sister Mary, brother Richard, and her parents. Winnifred was born on June 28, 1922 in London, ON. She was the third child of Norman and Margaret Tasker. In following with her care giving nature, Winnie pursued a career in nursing where she received her designation as a Registered Nurse from the Victoria Hospital of London, ON on January 31, 1945. On May 31, 1952 Winnie received her certificate of Public Health Nurse from the University of Western Ontario. Her nursing career took her across North America from Vancouver, BC to Stamford, CT and ultimately to Port Arthur, Fort William, now Thunder Bay, ON. While she was the VON Nurse in Charge for the Thunder Bay region, she met her future husband, George. They married on June 19, 1954. Shortly after they began their family and welcomed Stephen in 1955, Michael in 1957 and Philip in 1958. Not long after, in September 1961, the family relocated to Winnipeg, MB, where George had been raised. Winnie devoted her time and energy to her family. Not only did she love her family, she welcomed and loved the first of four Labrador Retrievers beginning in 1969. Winnie was a fabulous cook and baker, preparing the meals single handedly which were quite often from scratch. She enjoyed volunteering for the March of Dimes and Heart and Stroke Foundation amongst others. She will be remembered for her generosity, compassion and being ever mindful of the needs of others and those less fortunate than ourselves. It was in the 1970s that Winnie returned to the VON where she would visit those confined to their homes. Not only did she visit patients in their homes, she also worked with Meals on Wheels. It was during the 1980s and on that George, Winnie and Winnie's sister Mary would travel throughout North America - often stopping in to see Stephen and Philip and their families in Calgary, AB. She particularly cherished her time with her four grandchildren. When the Victoria Hospital Class of 1944 held reunions, Winnie was sure to attend right up until the mid 2000s and was among the last survivors of this class. The family wishes to thank the staff at Tuxedo Villa for their care of our mother. We also wish to thank the Emergency staff at Grace Hospital for their compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice or the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2. Winnie's memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 9, 2014 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB.
