FRED N. WICKENDEN October 29, 1919 - June 1, 2014 We are sad to announce the passing of Fred N. Wickenden on Sunday evening, June 1, 2014, at the Deer Lodge Centre. Fred was predeceased by his parents Fred and Sarah Wickenden, and siblings Arthur, George, Jim and Donna. Fred was born in Brandon, MB. He attended school in the area and began working as a farm labourer in his mid-teens. For a short time Fred served in the Armed Forces. He met his future wife, Anne Pawlychka, while working on the C.P.R. They were married in 1949 and moved to Winnipeg where Fred worked at Stovel Printing for 27 years. Fred and Anne loved the outdoors and spent many happy years visiting their cottage at Sandy Lake, also developing many friendships in the area. They both enjoyed the Chatfield Club socials that were held in Winnipeg. After Anne's passing in 1989, Fred faithfully volunteered at the Alzheimer Society for many years. He also volunteered at the Deer Lodge Centre for 17 years until his health failed. Fred's love of nature extended to many country trips where he enjoyed walking the shores of Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipeg. He enjoyed family gatherings, bonfires and clipping branches at his nephews' out of town properties. There are many wonderful and happy memories that we shall cherish of Uncle Fred. According to Fred's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private interment will be held at Chapel Lawn. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.ca 204-885-9715

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I have to say I affectionaly nic named Fred to "Uncle Fred" and he and I shared much together from stories bout his trips to the Light House to his days working at the print shop, all while cleaning the leaves from the eaves to giving the garden hedge a little trim. Always wanting to help, he'd frequently call to see if there was any neat nicking to be done. I can say with oil can in hand there was not a squeeky wheel around my place and my lawn mower always had the sharpest blade. We also renovated my house and enjoyed the the time watching the transition of our work. This house I refer to is the house that he lived in prior to moving to Roselyn Road. I found it as I was driving by with a wooden for sale sign in the front yard many years ago. That is how I met 'Uncle Fred'. Some how the past few years our paths seperated with me getting busy and with the belief that he would always be there. So I leave this, now the news of his passing has arrived .. rest in peace 'Uncle Fred' and the world is a much better place after having had you in it. - Posted by: Cathy Hay (Friend ) on: Oct 20, 2014

  • I have fond memories of spending the summer holidays of '72 in Winnipeg with Uncle Fred and Aunt Anne. My father Jim was youngest of the Wickenden siblings and admired Fred as his older brother. Unfortunately, I lost touch with Uncle Fred when he moved from his condominium in Winnipeg. I have many photo's of Uncle Fred and Aunt Anne doing what they enjoyed most-the outdoors and fishing. Wishing his loved ones peace in knowing he was much loved and respected by many. - Posted by: Carol Wickenden (Niece-Daughter of Jim Wickenden (Toronto)) on: Sep 01, 2014
