ROBERT (BOB) SPEAR 1926 - 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert (Bob) Parrish Spear, a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Bob was predeceased by his parents, Elmer Spear and Mabel Spear; sister Barbara Jane Wood; son Robert William Spear; grandson Kelty Dennehy, and grandaughter, Riley Dennehy. Left to celebrate his memory are his loving wife Rae, of 58 years; daughter Catherine Moss (Paul Sweatman); daughter Ginny Dennehy (Kerry); daughter Nancy Dorman (Jim); son Ted Spear (Dyan); daughter Cheryl Irwin (David); daughter-in-law Cathy Spear; grandsons Rory Moss (Brooke), Jesse Moss (Morgan), Matt Hogg; and granddaughters Tegan Moss (Josh), Jacqueline Spear, Tina Hogg, Kailey Spear, Samantha Spear and Lauren Spear; an ever-growing host of great-grandchildren; cousin and lifelong friend, Bill Parrish (Donna), and cousins Pat Lee and Betty Crawford. Bob led a full life in which he touched the lives of many. He was born on November 6, 1926 and lived in Winnipeg for his entire life. First and foremost he was a dedicated husband and father who always put family first. He especially cherished his many years at "the cabin" with family and friends. Upon completing high school, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy and then returned to Winnipeg to work with his father at R.E. Spear of Canada Ltd. He established Spear Supply and then purchased and developed Scripline and Playgrounds Are Us, before "retiring" in 2013. He was active in his local community and a parishioner of St. Andrews River Heights United Church. Bob was a member of the Masonic Order, Scottish Rite and served as Illustrious Potentate of Khartum Temple in 1972, then was elected President of the Midwest Shrine Association in 1979. He was a proud member of the Royal Order of Jesters for over 50 years. Bob Spear will be remembered for his sense of humour, his generosity of spirit, and his ability to connect with everyone he met. He was loved by many and will be missed by all. The family would like to thank the professional and caring staff of the Victoria General Hospital. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 19 at 2:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame (across from Brookside Cemetery). In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob's memory may be made to the Shriners Transportation Fund, 1150 Wilkes Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3P 1B9, or the Kelty Patrick Dennehy Foundation, Box 35, Whistler, BC V0N 1B8, www.thekeltyfoundation.org NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

  • I just heard about the passing of such a fine man. Mr. Spear always had a smile on his face, a twinkle in his eye and a joke to make you laugh. He was a great family man, who adored his family. I will remember fondly the few visits to family cabin with our group of friends, and he would stop by to "check on things" just because he was driving by. I know that my dear friend Cheryl and her family will miss him greatly. He was one of the good guys. A toast to you sir. - Posted by: Nancy Teel (Family friend) on: Jul 06, 2014

  • It was with great sadness that I leaned of the passing of Mr. Spear, and my heart felt condolences go out to Mrs. Spear, Cathi, Ginny and all the rest of the family. Growing up in Winnipeg, and as Cathi's friend, I was in the Spear household as much as my own. Both Mr. and Mrs. Spear always made me feel welcome. Mr. Spear was so entertaining and funny. He loved to tease me and get me laughing at myself. The summers at the cabin were wonderful. Mr. Spear always had jobs for everyone and would go out of his way to make sure that I was working. I never was. Cathi and I were too busy suntanning to work. Mr. Spear loved the family dinners at the dining room table at the cabin. I would sit in amazement at the huge platters of barbequed steaks which Mr. Spear so proudly brought to the table, The dinners were always fun and Mr. Spear always got everyone laughing. He seemed to take great pleasure in seeing everyone happy and laughing. As funny as he was, he also had a soft side and a big heart. He was a very generous man. To Mrs. Spear,Cathi, and the rest of he family, please know that I, and I know all your many friends, offer comfort and support to you at this time of grief. Everyone who knew Bob Spear will be feeling the loss of a great human being. Sincerely, Margaret - Posted by: Margaret Sutherland (Friend of Cathi and other members of Spear family) on: Jun 18, 2014

  • Praying for you and your family, Cheryl. - Posted by: Anna-Marie Kulas (daughter's friend) on: Jun 18, 2014

  • "Just call me R.P" were the first words Bob said to my 15 year old self - with a twinkle in his eye and his ever ready smile. 34 years later, Bob Spear has been a constant in my life (as a life-long Shrine brat) and I am a better person for knowing him. Bob was the rare type of person who would actually LISTEN to people and was genuinely interested and engaged in you and your story. The world has lost a gem. R.P will twinkle forever in the stars and I will hold my wonderful memories close in my heart. Bob was one of the good ones. My sincerest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to Rae, his family and to all who knew Bob. May all the tomorrows be gentle on your hearts. Rest well R.P... you earned it. <3 - Posted by: Cynthia Booden Firth (Family Friend) on: Jun 18, 2014
