MYRCEL EWASHKO With great sadness we announce the passing of Myrcel Ewashko on June 14, 2014 at the age of 87. Myrcel was predeceased by his loving wife, Anne, in 1998; sister, Kathrine; brother, Thomas; two younger sisters; his father, Wasyl, and mother, Anne (Zubrack). Left to mourn his passing are sons Arvid (Diane) and Blaine (Dawn); grandchildren Darin, Miranda and Brandt; sister, Nettie; many nieces and nephews, and extended family members. Myrcel was born in Oakburn, Manitoba, where he grew up on the family farm. In June 1947, he married Anne Drul. They farmed in the Oakburn area until 1957, when the family moved to Winnipeg. Coming from the farm, Myrcel was a hard worker and first started working for B.F. Goodrich. He later worked for Crescent Creamery, Quinton's Cleaners and, subsequently, as maintenance foreman at Fort Osborne Barracks at 17 Wing with the Department of National Defense, until his retirement in 1990. In addition to his full-time work, Myrcel also worked in numerous part-time jobs, eventually establishing his own cleaning business. Myrcel was always very proud of his family - especially his grandchildren, who knew him as "Gido". He had many great qualities and was always willing to teach his sons in the fine arts of fishing or carpentry. Dad's love of music had a young Arvid on the accordion with Blaine keeping time on the drums for many a polka. Dad enjoyed and was proud of our playing no matter the sound. Another great source of enjoyment was spending time at the cottage, which he built with his family, and where many fond memories were created and shared. Dad loved to fish, and later on Mom joined him in the boat. Mom seemed to start catching more and bigger fish than Dad, but, of course, that was because Dad had to steer the boat, change the hooks, and so on. Meanwhile, Mom would be grinning ear to ear listening to the excuses. A favourite pastime was playing cards with family and friends. There was great rivalry between the men and the women; however, the men always seemed to be more successful at finding a way to win - and sometimes they even did so within the rules. Dad and Mom also enjoyed many extensive car travels from coast to coast, across the U.S. and special trips to Hawaii. The family would like to extend our gratitude to the staff of the Salvation Army Golden West Centennial Lodge for the excellent care they provided to Dad during his stay there. We would also like to extend a special thank you to Brenda for her additional companionship and support. Dad always looked forward to your visits, and this was a great comfort to him and to the family. A funeral service will be held at Green Acres Funeral Home and Cemetery, Hwy. 1 East and Navin Road on Friday, June 20, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army if individuals so choose.
