LOUIS ALEXANDER (ALEX) BERG March 19, 1921 - May 1, 2013 Our father, Louis Alexander (Alex) Berg, peacefully passed away at the age of 92 years on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at St. Boniface Hospital with his three children, Merrill, Karen and Greg by his side. He is survived by his daughters Merrill Berg (Mark Doerksen) of Winnipeg, MB and Dr. Karen Berg and her children, Aren Ludlow, Anora Ludlow and Sam Besley of Salt Spring Island, BC; son Dr. Greg Berg (Krisha) and their children Alexei, Adam and Andrew of Sault Ste. Marie, ON; special nieces and nephews and their children, and relatives in Canada, the USA and Norway. Alex was born in Inwood, MB on March 19, 1921 to Peter and Sofia Berg who came to Canada from Norway in the early 1900s. He was the sixth of their seven children: Arthur, Edith, Ken, Ruth, Peter and Elsie and was the last surviving child of the family. Alex grew up on the family farm in Inwood and attended school in Inwood and Teulon. He obtained his teaching certificate from the Winnipeg Normal School in 1940 and taught in one-room schools in Sprague and Teulon. Alex served in the Second World War in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1942 to 1946 as an aero engine mechanic in Canada, England and Burma. Upon returning from the war, Alex entered the University of Manitoba and graduated with his Bachelor of Commerce Degree in 1949. After graduation, Alex worked in various roles as an accountant, auditor, and office manager in private practice, with Eldon Johnston and for several companies: Snowdon's Ltd., Transair Ltd., Robinson Little Ltd. and Brooks Equipment Co. Ltd. Alex married Marguerite (Ramona) Campbell on June 2, 1950 residing in Winnipeg and then on Kootenay Crescent in Transcona where they raised their family. In July 1963, Alex joined the Manitoba Government Civil Service and became an Instructor at the Manitoba Institute of Technology (MIT, now known as Red River College). In October 1967, Alex was appointed as Principal of the Business Administrative Division of MIT. In April 1973, he worked for the Manitoba Provincial Government as Co-Secretary for the Manpower Needs Committee. In 1979, Alex was Director of Manpower, Planning and Immigration. He retired in 1986 and cared for our mother as her Alzheimer's disease progressed until she passed in 1993. Alex loved his family deeply. He took great interest in his children and grandchildren, following their growth and endeavors with a keen eye. He was very proud of them. Alex appreciated the world around him. He enjoyed observing geese and deer and loved to fish, hunt, pick berries and tend to his yard. He had many culinary adventures and prepared excellent roast beef dinners and steak barbeques. He had a grand sense of humour. Alex was very proud of his Norwegian heritage. He enjoyed dining on Scandinavian delicacies, taking part in cultural events and attending annual fall suppers at Inwood. He appreciated music of all sorts but especially classical and definitely not contemporary. Alex very much valued the company of family and friends and took great care to stay in touch. Alex was a long-time, dedicated member of several organizations: Sturgeon Creek Masonic Lodge #145. He received his 50 year jewel from Grand Lodge and his 55 year pin in 2011; Vasa Order of America, Lodge Strindberg #259 (Vasa Lund), which he joined in 1970. He received a honorary membership in 2012, and the Royal Canadian Legion St. James Branch #4. Our family would like to thank all of the support provided by family members, friends, neighbours, many individuals who provided personal services, home care and health care professionals who helped our father live a good long life. We also extend a special thank you to everyone at Devonshire House for the wonderful attention you gave Dad in the last year of his life and the Palliative Care unit at the St. Boniface Hospital for the care you provided in his remaining days. Dad loved life and appreciated that you were part of it. Thank you for being with him on his journey. You are forever in our hearts dear Dad. We love you. Rest in peace. A Celebration of Life for Alex will be held on Saturday, July 5, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame, Winnipeg (across from Brookside Cemetery). Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I read this obituary just recently, I am sorry for your loss and although some time has passed, we wonder as we go on about our lives, when the pain of loss will subside. Although I had never met your Dad I do know that he, along with his many travels of visitation he used to visit with my aunt who has passed November 2003. He was so kind to even come to the hospital to visit her. They may have shared many stories as her family was also from Norway. I remember my aunt spoke often of Mr Alex Berg so it leaves me to wonder if this gentleman was in fact the Alex Berg she spoke of? Her name was "MIss MIldred Storsater,. MIldred donated her time as the secretary for the Icelantic Canadian Magazine for many, many years. My condolences . Your father was a highly respected Gentleman - Posted by: Debbie Sutton (Friend) on: Jun 24, 2014

  • It's never too late to say I love you. I miss you. You were the glue that held our family together. I said this before. I remember you with love and awe... you were very scary too. When I was not even a thought in someone's mind you were a young man returning from war. I was afraid of you and your firm presence. We grew together as as a family over the years. Your love of life, your incredible mind and generous heart are always with me. I will celebrate your life with honour and respect. - Posted by: Beverley (Niece) on: Jun 21, 2014
