DR. RONALD ROY PEREIRA Peacefully on June 28, 2014, Dr. Ronald Roy Pereira, age 82 passed away at Poseidon Care Centre. Ron was born on December 12, 1932 in Kowloon Hong Kong and immigrated to Canada in 1952. Ron was predeceased by his father Roy Alfred Pereira, his mother Mercedes Rosario, his brother Peter Pereira, brother-in-law Peter Sewell, father-in-law Clodomir Denis, mother in law Regina Denis, sister-in-law Rita Lévèsque, brother-in-law Gédéon Denis and Aunt Rose Raymond. Ron is survived by his loving wife of 24 years Gisèle, children Denise Anderson, Anthony Pereira (Chris), Michelle Elizabeth Pereira, Ronald Pereira (Genni), Michelle Marie Darrow (Peter) and Marcel Darrow. Grandchildren: Brody, Nicholas, Sammie (David), Dane, Cecily, Dominique, Alexander, Kileigh, Brenna, Ryan, Erin, Aiden, Molly, Riley and MacKenzie. Siblings: Yvonne Sewell, Pauline (Mike) Ward, Eric (Gladys) Pereira, Wilfrid (Jeannine) Denis, sister-in-law Madeleine Denis, brother-in- law Maurice Lévèsque. He is survived by numerous nephews, nieces, friends and professional acquaintances around the world. Ron lived his life to the fullest and gave 100% to everything he did whether it was obtaining his Ph.D. from Ohio State, building his house, travelling across the globe to visit with friends and family or cooking a meal for others to enjoy. Ron was a passionate man who gave selflessly to his family, friends and to his profession as professor in the Faculty of Food Sciences at the University of Manitoba. All six children can attest to often hearing his words of wisdom "Study hard and get that piece of paper." His pride in his heritage meant that we were all lucky enough to have learned to cook at least one Portuguese or oriental dish with the help of his expertise. Shortly after retirement in 1995 his unofficial hobby became the stray cat hotel in St. Adolphe, somehow all the cats who needed a home knew where to go to get a good meal and a warm bed. The family would like to thank the Niverville and Winnipeg Home Care staff, We Care and the Charleswood Day Program for the care and compassion they provided to Ron and Gisèle during the last four years of his life. We are also deeply grateful to the staff at Poseidon Care Centre whose care and empathy during Ron's last days provided him with dignity and comfort. A celebration of Ron's life will be held Saturday, July 5, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 255 Stafford Avenue. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to: Siloam Mission, Fort Whyte, Charleswood Day Program or Prairie Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. These agencies represent Ron's life interest in animals, the under privileged and a centre that provide him with many days of enjoyment since moving to Winnipeg. Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • My sincere condolences to the Pereira family. I have very fond memories of Dr Pereira from my undergrad years at the University of Manitoba Food Science program. I took most of his courses because he was an exceptional teacher and he was genuinely interested in the well being of his students. His classes were always lively because of his great sense of humour and passion for the subject. My one regret is that I did not stay in touch, he will always be in my prayers. - Posted by: Deidre Ng (Former Food Science student) on: Jul 18, 2014

  • My sincere condolences to Dr. Pereira's family. He and I first met in 1982 when I was a student in Agriculture. His ability to present lively lectures made him a popular professor. Being fluent in Cantonese, he had a strong affinity to the Chinese-speaking students who reciprocated in kind. He was invited to many Christmas and Chinese New Year's parties by his students. I have fond memories of the pot-luck dinners that he hosted at his house. All of Dr. Pereira's former students from the Far-East will no doubt mourn his passing. - Posted by: Albert Chan (Former graduate student) on: Jul 07, 2014

  • To the Pereiria family, I had the privilege of spending some time with Ron before he moved to Winnipeg. There is none other like him. I can honestly say that I never anything to complain about where Ron is concerned, save his cheating ways in card playing:) He talked a lot about. his family and how much you all meant to him. He had an obvious compassion and concern for the well being of others. He was an obvious highly intelligent man with a gentle soul.Ron and I laughed a lot...he enjoyed teasing and came out with the odd swear word which would totally catch me off gaurd (he just didn't seem like the kind of man that would swear) and we laughed at my reation. I must tell you about the funniest thing I ever saw him do.On this one occasion a new mattress.was delivered.....he was beside himself with joy. after thr delivery guys finished setting it up for him we went back downstairs so that Ron could sign for it. ....except Ron was no where to be seen. I went back up stairs and there he was eith a big ass straw hat on his head, one hand on the top of it and the other hand twirling with his index finger pointed upward and he was dancing in a circle. I asked him what he ead doing and he replied "lets. party" :D I will never forget Ron. He had an amazing impact on me and was a true example of what it means to move on inspite of..... Sorry for your loss. I know that you will miss him a lot. My thoughts and prayers are with you all, Sincerely Alma Brown - Posted by: Alma. Brown (Home Care worker) on: Jul 07, 2014

  • I remember Ron through my childhood as a living, gentle man. Always ready to be excited about my life's little adventures. Squeaky cheese and great meals with laughter also come quickly to mind. Please accept my sincere apologies for your loss. Ron was a very special man. - Posted by: Susan Waters Larocque (Goddaughter) on: Jul 03, 2014

  • My fond memories of Ron stem from his extended family, the DeCuypers. My Grandfather Archie treated Ron like a son. Ron used to call my grandpa Dad. My father Bert and his brothers and sisters treated Ron as a brother. And all of my cousins loved Ron. As a young boy who came to Canada for summer holidays I witnessed the interactions of this wonderful man. He had a large presence in the DeCuyper, De Cruyenaere families. My sincere condolences to all. RIP Ron Pereira Ryan DeCuyper - Posted by: Ryan DeCuyper (treated as a nephew ) on: Jul 02, 2014
