JOHN FRANCES (JACK) HAWTHORNE 1946 - 2014 On Monday, July 7, 2014, a beautiful sunny, summer day, when he should have been on the back 9 of Grand Pines Golf Course or throwing a fishing line in at Lester Beach, Jack passed away at Selkirk General Hospital, after a courageous struggle with mesothelioma (asbestos related cancer). Jack will be forever missed by his loving wife of 44 years, Pat (nee McBurney); his children David and Tory and John and Rhonda; his grandchildren, Jesse, Jake and Harriet; his siblings and their families, Gail and Ken Roach and Jim and Mandy Hawthorne; Pat's siblings and their families, Tom and Sharon McBurney, Jake and Angie McBurney, Bonnie and Nick Iafolla, and Margaret and Tom Donahoe, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents Douglas and Martha Hawthorne, brother Dan Hawthorne, in-laws Jim and Jessie McBurney, and brothers-in-law Bill and Donnie McBurney. Jack was born and raised in the Weston area of Winnipeg, Manitoba where he met the love of his life, his soul mate and best friend, Pat. They were married on May 2, 1970 and built a wonderful and happy family life together in Winnipeg, Abbotsford, Selkirk and Lester Beach. Jack was a proud journeyman electrician and worked as an electrical contractor, entrepreneur and facility manager. He was employed for many years by the University of Manitoba (Health Sciences Centre Campus) and the Royal Bank of Canada and worked on many major projects in Winnipeg and Northern Manitoba. When he wasn't working, Jack enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, boating, and cottage life. He also enjoyed golfing, curling, playing old timer hockey and spent hours coaching and managing his sons' sports teams. Jack loved Lester Beach and spending time at the cottage. He always had a list of projects and had the perfect tool for every job. He was always ready to share from his stockpile of electrical and building materials or lend a helping hand to anyone. Family was everything. His wonderful grandchildren were a gift and gave him so much joy. He was a great Poppa, always ready to play. We, his family, cannot imagine life without him and his love. Jack will be sadly missed and will remain forever in our hearts. A Celebration of Jack's life will be held on Friday, July 11, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue, (across from Brookside Cemetery). Jack was the warmest, caring, and giving person I know. I knew him when I was a child, but didn't get to know him again until later in life, and I'm sure glad we met again. I didn't think about how short his time really was and I'm sorry that I didn't spend more time getting to know him and his family better. He gave to a few of my less fortunate friends and family during the Christmas season, but would not let me reveal who he was. He made a difference in these people's lives, who otherwise would not have had much to give. I know he is happy to be in heaven with his loved ones, but the family that is left will miss him dearly. Pat, we are all here if you need a shoulder to cry on or someone to talk with. We know you will be lost without him, but he will always be with you and your family. He was a treasure and will remain a treasure in our hearts. Peterson/Webb family. - Posted by: Linda & Lorne Webb (Peterson family) (cousin) on: Jul 10, 2014

My husband, Don and I, enjoyed visiting with Jack & Pat on their trips to Palm Desert, California. He was good natured and tolerant of us as we teased him about his Canadian tan. I remember that on his first trip down, he was amazed with the sunshine, warmth and all of the golf courses! May he have lots of golf in Heaven. He`ll be missed... - Posted by: Tina Morency (Cousin) on: Jul 09, 2014

To Pat & Family; We are very saddened to hear about Jack's passing. It was only a short time ago that we were all teenagers going to parties every weekend and thinking that we would never grow old. The beauty of life is that we will always have those memories to treasure. Jack was a kind and gentle soul. Sorry for your loss. Take care.
