HAZEL COSENS After a long and productive life, Hazel Cosens, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother died peacefully on July 12, 2014 at the age of 96. She leaves behind five children: Douglas (Linda), Susan, John (Brenda), Lori (Rick) and George (Lisa) and 10 grandchildren: Carman (Angela), Daniel (Melissa), Candace (Mike), David (Leah), Ben, Andrew, Emily, Harvey, Nicholas and Castley. Her ten great-grandchildren include Angelique, Cassandra, Damian, Talitha, Isaiah, Seth, Mikiya, Sebastian, Alicia and Evan. She was predeceased by her husband Harold Cosens in June of 1987 and is survived by her sister Edna Tarrant. Mom was born in Avonlea, Saskatchewan on June 27, 1918 to Susanna Violet and Wilfred Baker Lee. The family moved to Gunton, Manitoba when Mom was six years old. After finishing school in Gunton, Mom worked as a domestic in Winnipeg and, during the Second World War, she joined the army as a cook. We enjoyed the benefits of that experience. Her pies were second to none. She later returned to Gunton to run a restaurant along with her Mother and sister Edna. When she married Harold, Mom became a farm wife with all the hard work and sacrifice that farming entailed. Once her own children were in school, she worked in Winnipeg, in the garment industry that was thriving in those days. She enjoyed the diversity of people whom she met in that environment. After she retired', Mom then took up working in home care for a number of years where she cared for elderly people. In her later years, Mom lived in Teulon, Manitoba, and then in Winnipeg. Family and friends were very important in her life. She thought nothing of hopping on a bus to see someone who needed company. Mom was a sports fan and was especially fond of baseball. She enjoyed the Winnipeg Jets (the first time around), Winnipeg Goldeyes and Toronto Blue Jays. The occasional excursion to watch a Goldeyes game was a real treat for her. Curling was also a sport Mom liked. Having curled in her youth, she liked to watch it in her later years. Mom loved to travel. Once she retired from farm life, she enjoyed bus tours and frequently visited family who had moved away. She was always very independent and found it challenging to adjust to life where she had to rely on other people to care for her. Her last few years were spent at Tuxedo Villa where she was well cared for and kept very busy with bingo, exercise classes and other activities. It was never easy to reach her by phone because she was usually out doing something. We thank the staff at Tuxedo Villa for making her feel at home and for the wonderful care she received during her time there. She is now on her final journey and we wish her well. May the angels guide her home. The funeral service will be held at Kirkfield Park United Church, 472 Kirkfield Street, Winnipeg on Monday, July 21, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. followed by refreshments. A private interment will follow at Windsor Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to a charity of your choice. MACKENZIE FUNERAL HOME STONEWALL 204-467-2525 mackhome@mts.net

Sorry to hear Aunt Hazel is gone. When I was in Teulon Hospital nineteen years ago she visited me every day bringing a pop and sometimes taking me for awhile to her place. She was such a kind person. I also remember when I was very young the visits on the farm with Aunt Hazel, Uncle Harold and family. She was truly one of God's angels on earth and now in heaven. With love and prayers Thelma - Posted by: Thelma Cosens (Jim's daughter) on: Jul 20, 2014
