PETER STOKES Suddenly on Sunday, July 13, 2014, Peter passed away at St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 77 years. Peter is survived by his wife Signy Stokes (nee Hanson), his daughters Kirstin (Dan Smith) and Adine (Adam Kintopf), his grandchildren Erik, Carter and Nolen, and his sister Pat Brockelsby (Bill) and brother Bob Stokes (Kathy). He was predeceased by his father Harold (Hal) Stokes and mother Stella Stokes, and sister Elizabeth Mahood. Peter was born April 26, 1937 in Edmonton, AB, and moved to Fort Garry in 1948 where he attended Viscount Alexander School. An entrepreneur at heart and in practice Pete left employment with General Electric to form Electrotech Sales in the 1980s. Pete retired from retirement in the 1990s to form Contemporary Lighting, and in recent years proudly served as a member of the Winnipeg Commissionaires' document delivery division. Everyone who knew Pete even a little knew three things about him: he was deeply committed to his family, he was passionate about golf, and his infectious smile and trademark handlebar mustache were a powerful combination. Never one to do things in halves, Pete committed to everything he did with a full heart. He was a deeply committed synchronized swimming and music dad, and an enthusiastic lacrosse puppa. Pete was fiercely proud of his children and grandchildren sharing the joy in their accomplishments with them and all he met. Pete was also a lifelong fan and season ticket holder of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and was overjoyed to see them take the Als game on Friday night from his room in the I.H. Asper Clinical Research Institute at the St. Boniface Hospital. Surrounded by his grandsons, Pete cheered his Bombers towards their first out of town victory. Thank you to the warm and welcoming staff of the I.H. Asper Clinical Research Institute who helped dad prepare for his surgery and to his nurse, Brad, for sharing a few minutes to celebrate Friday night's game with dad. Thank you also to Peter's cardiothoracic surgeon Michael C. Moon and to the staff of Grace and Victoria General Hospital Emergency Departments. Your insight, compassion and respect for Peter during his time with you was important to him and appreciated by his family. A public memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery). Flowers gratefully declined donations in Peter's memory may be made to The Shriner's Burn Fund or Transportation Fund, C/O Shrine House, 1155 Wilkes Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3P 1B9.
