Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryRICHARD CAYER 1926 - 2014 Peacefully on July 22, 2014, Richard Cayer passed away at the Bethesda Hospital, Steinbach, with family by his side. Dad was born December 27, 1926 at his parents' home, Albert and Alma Cayer, in Vassar, Manitoba. He was delivered by the local midwife Mrs. Hebert. He married the love of his life, Florence Lillian Cote on December 29, 1948. He resided the majority of his life in Vassar, Manitoba, were he brought up his four beautiful children. He spent his early working years in logging then truck driving in Winnipeg. At this point he suffered a spinal injury which left him a paraplegic. Doctors informed him he will never be able to walk again, which he refused to believe. Against all odds, after a couple of years in the hospital and rehabilitation he was able to walk out. He then attended schooling to become a Customs officer. Twenty five years later he retired from Customs. All of his life he was passionately dedicated to baseball and the community. In recognition of his accomplishments, the Richard Cayer Park was named in his honour. He is survived by: his two daughters: Karen (Ghislain) and Deena (Robert); daughter-in-law Beatrice (Larry); grandchildren: Jesse (Michelle), Tania, Keane (Betsy), Vanessa (Derek), Chantelle, Devin (Brynne), Jayse, and Brett; great-grandchildren: Tyree, Emma, Shaunti, Kayven and Abigail; five sisters: Francis, Lorraine, Gert, Gail (Rick), and Judy; brother Cub (Joyce), and brother-in-law Lou. He was predeceased by: his sons: Wayne and Lance; his wife Florence; his brothers: David and Raymond; his sisters: Aurora and Grace; and his son in-law Jack. Dad was a loving husband and father. He was well respected by his family, friends and all who met him. He will be fondly remembered by all. Each of us in our own special way remember you with love today. You will always be in our hearts. We love you Dad! The family wishes to thank the South East Home Care Workers, the Vita Personal Care Home, Bethesda Hospital, Steinbach, and the Roseau Altru Care for their compassionate, caring ways. Thank you. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Richard may be made to the Manitoba Paraplegic Association.
