IDA THORNHILL (RICHARDS) On July 27, 2014 at the age of 91, Ida Thornhill's long journey in life came to a peaceful end. Ida leaves to mourn her children Donna, Robert and Patricia (Bill). Ida lost her loving husband Richard after 58 years of marriage in 2011. Born on November 2, 1922 in Bangor, Saskatchewan, Ida enjoyed life on the family homestead with 11 siblings through the late 1920s and on through the harsh times of the Great Depression. From that large family she was predeceased by her parents Michael and Margaret Richards, brother Maurice, sisters Margaret Hewson, Nest Arnott and brothers John and William Richards. Ida is survived by her older sister Winnie Thompson (Reg), and younger siblings James (Leona), Gwladys Koschinsky, Megan Fergusson (Ward), Robert, Enid and David (Cathy). Ida moved to Winnipeg at the age of 20 and worked at Deer Lodge Hospital with the war veterans. After 10 years at Deer Lodge, she began working at G. F. and J. Galt Limited, a job which she thoroughly enjoyed. In 1953 Ida married Richard Thornhill, and so they began their life in the military as Richard was in the Air Force. The next chapter of Mom's life took her and their young family to places such as St. Jean, Quebec, North Bay, Ontario, and Greenwood, Nova Scotia. Finally in 1970 the Thornhills settled in St. James where Ida spent her days doting over her family. Every Friday afternoon for 37 years she bowled for the Kent IMPS Women's League at Polo Park until the age of 85. Mom loved to garden, sing and listen to music, especially Welsh hymns. She was very proud of her Welsh heritage and loved spending time with her siblings. In 2011, Ida moved to Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence and just recently relocated to Lions Personal Care Centre. We would like to thank all staff at Sturgeon Creek and Lions for their compassionate care and understanding. Special thanks to Ida's tablemates for looking out for her during her stay at Sturgeon. Also a huge thank you to all of the wonderful home care staff, Dr. Rumbolt and Esther Daga's staff (especially Paula) who always helped Mom look her best! Flowers are gratefully declined. However, donations to Salvation Army would be appreciated. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I have many fond memories of my Aunty Ida. I will miss her and will always remember her with fondness. Many times I would ride my bike over to her house to spend time with my cousins Donna, Bob, and Pat. I also remember family gatherings there, I always enjoyed that so much. Rest easy Aunty, I will miss you! I love you always. Your niece Janis XOXOXO - Posted by: Janis Richards (Niece) on: Aug 02, 2014

  • I loved Auntie Ida, particularly her voice. I remember being over once for a family lunch. My grandmother, Nain, was there wearing a snappy red watch. Aunt Ida made the best peach upside down cake I've ever had. Happy times and memories. She will be missed. - Posted by: Beverly Frederickson (Neice) on: Jul 31, 2014
