MOLLY SWIRSKY Molly Swirsky passed away July 29, 2014 at the Simkin Centre, where she had resided the last two years. She was predeceased by her husband of 71 years, Eric and by her four siblings. She is survived by her daughter Carolyn Rubin (Earl Standil), son Neil Swirsky (Elaine), grandchildren Shannon Villeneuve (Jean-Luc), Josh Rubin (Dana), Zak Rubin, Matthew Swirsky (Jackie), Amy Swirsky (Michael Schacter), and Jill Swirsky, great-grandchildren Makenna, Hunter, Addison, Kiera, Maya, Jacob, Zev, Seth, and Emily, sisters-in-law Doris Gilman, Gertie Chochinov, and Edith Gardner, brother-in-law Sam Swire (Rita), and numerous nieces and nephews. Molly, the daughter of Harry and Sarah Gardner, was born September 11, 1922 in Winnipeg. She grew up on McKenzie Street just around the corner from Eric who lived on Flora Avenue. They married on March 28, 1942. Two months later his army regiment was deployed overseas. They were apart until his safe return in December 1945. During his absence, Molly lived with her parents and worked in a drugstore. After they were reunited, they started a family and Eric went into business. For many years Molly worked part time at Mischa Pollock's clothing store on Selkirk Avenue where she was a superb salesperson. She later worked for Manitoba Lotteries Corporation until they both retired in 1987. They enjoyed many years with family and friends at their cottage in Winnipeg Beach, spent winters in Palm Springs, were regulars at the breakfast club at the McPhillips Street Burger King, and attended the Gwen Secter Centre every week. Molly was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She and Eric were inseparable and truly complemented each other, bringing different strengths to a very loving marriage. She was very energetic, outgoing and friendly to all, affectionate, generous, funny, analytical, organized, an excellent problem solver, decisive, strong-willed, and highly principled. A funeral service was held July 31, 2014 at Congregation Etz Chayim. The family would like to express their appreciation to staff at the Simkin Centre and especially to Molly's loving companion, Shauna Laoag. Donations in Molly's memory can be directed to the Saul and Claribel Simkin Centre, Gwen Secter Creative Living Centre or to the charity of choice.

As a close friend of Carolyn's all through grade school and junior high, I was a frequent guest at the Swirksy's. Molly always had a generous and warm welcome. I recall her exuberance and enthusiasm for life and remember equally well, the many kindnesses (and lots of shlepping around of adolescent girls) by Eric. May both of their memories be a blessing. I first met Molly and her husband Eric in 1978 when I was part of a visit to Israel. What a delight they both were. What I recall about Molly, and that feeling was re-enforced every time I met her thereafter, was just this. Molly was one happy, exuberant lady who looked at the bright side of life. She was gregarious, and just pleasant to be around. She was in some way the opposite of her husband Eric, who was also a real gentleman and pleasant to be with, but quiet as opposed to his wife's extroverted personality. I enjoyed being with Molly whenever we would meet and she was always so interested in me and what I was doing and her favourite expression, said as only she could say it when we connected by chance was "Gerela: how are you doing?" She was from what I could tell a wonderful mother and devoted grandmother and she will be missed enormously I am sure. My condolences to you - Posted by: Gerry Posner (friend) on: Jul 31, 2014
