FRANCES GOTTFRIED 1916 - 2014 With profound sadness the family of Frances Gottfried announces her passing on July 30, 2014. Mom is survived by her three children Jimmy (Pat) Gottfried, Betty (Sid) Paulsen, and Larry (Karen) Gottfried; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren Michael and Melanie (Taylor, Devon); David and Janet (Zack, Sawyer); Clinton and Sandra (Ella); Stacey and Paul (Matthew); Derek and Theresa (Joel, Cayden, Livia); Jeffrey and Kelly; Bridget and Roger (Sadie); Amanda and Dan (Jack, Lily); Toban and Nicole; Jared and Kayla. She was predeceased by her husband Mike, her parents Frank and Jessie Marchak; her sister Mary Warsaba, brothers Egnace and Tony Marchak, and her brothers and sisters-in-law. Mom (Baba) was born and raised in Meleb and attended Park School until grade nine. At the age of 15 she went to Winnipeg to work as a house maid and nanny. After a few years she went with Dad to Toronto to continue her work as a children's maid and cook. They got married in 1938 and continued to work there until they came back to farm in Meleb. They raised their family and Mom became a homemaker and farmer's wife. Their generosity and hospitality was known and appreciated by all who visited them at their home. Dad passed away in 1996 and Mom stayed on the farm alone. She appreciated visits from neighbours and family. She moved to Winnipeg in her later years to be taken care of by her family. Our mom was an incredible woman; her accomplishments were many, especially the culinary skills she acquired over the years. She was a loving, devoted and tireless wife, mother and Baba. Thank you to the home care workers who cared for her in Meleb and Winnipeg, as well as Dr. S. V. Patel in Gimli and numerous health care providers in Winnipeg. Special thanks are extended to the staff at Luther Home for their compassionate care of Mom over the last year. Viewing will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church in Gimli, MB, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Berlo, MB. Pallbearers will be Frances' grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be her great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Peter and Paul Cemetery c/o Box 70, Meleb, MB R0C 2C0. "If flowers grow in heaven, Lord, then pick a bunch for me. Then place them in my mother's arms and tell her they're from me. Tell her that I love and miss her and when she turns to smile, Place a kiss upon her cheek and hold her for awhile." • I will always remember the warmth, kindness and hospitality of 'Baba'. She was such a genuine person who opened her heart and home to everyone. She made her guests feel like they were part of the family. For me, her greatest gift was her modeling of caring for people, always having room for one more and her 'joie de vivre'. Her legacy lives on as the Gottfried family emulate these traits. I can not imagine a more worthy accomplishment. May fond memories bring comfort to the family. My sincere condolences and may 'Baba' be at peace with her sweetheart. - Posted by: Connie Korchak (Friend) on: Aug 01, 2014

  • I will never forget the wonderful afternoons spent watching her birds, sharing tea and stories. Her home made bacon was amazing. I marvelled at how she was able to make anything from scratch. She was incredibly frugal and liked to give me heck for spending money on "trivial things". Rest well Frances and enjoy your garden and birds in heaven. - Posted by: dutchess (friend) on: Aug 01, 2014

  • Dear Baba, I will never forget the year I stayed with you. I would be woken up every Tuesday morning by the smell of the bacon and eggs you were making me for breakfast at 7 am on the dot. I would come into the kitchen to see the yellow bowl full of dough rising for our morning of perogy making! Knowing you & Gido are together again brings a smile to our hearts! Love and miss you forever, Amanda - Posted by: Amanda (Grandaoghter) on: Aug 01, 2014

  • I have such fond memories of going to the Gottfried house with aunty Dora and uncle Matt when I was a small child. Always welcomed with a warm smile, a hug and a kiss. The whole family treated me so well, but mmmm the cooking that Frances did was so amazing. The laughter in the house at those card games! I loved her friendliness and devotion to her friends and family. Frances was one of those people that you inspired to be like. Thank you for being my inspiration! - Posted by: Linda Chorney McMurtry (Friend) on: Aug 01, 2014
