DALE HUGHESMAN

Date of Passing: Aug 01, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDALE HUGHESMAN Ronald Dale Hughesman, April 4, 1963 to August 1, 2014. It is with great sadness we announce the passing of a wonderful father, son, partner, brother, uncle, friend and coach. Dale passed away after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 51 at St. Boniface Hospital surrounded by family. He is survived by his two sons, Adam, and Matthew, special partner Andrea and stepdaughter Nicole, his parents Ron and Margaret, brother Darren (Shannon), nephews, Mason and Jordan and his buddies Sidney and Suzy. He also leaves to mourn his special Auntie Nessie, many aunts, uncles, cousins and Angie, the mother of his boys. Dale was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and attended Salisbury, Morse Place Jr. High and Kildonan East High School. He then attended University of Winnipeg on a hockey scholarship. After university Dale decided to join his father in the family business, Esdale Printing. They were later joined by Darren and continued to work side by side to build the business over the next many years. He loved his work life with his family and the friends and business contacts that he met throughout his career. He was appointed to many positions over the years including President of ESPCC, President of Pine Ridge Golf Club, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the MJHL, Board member of REMHA as well as his involvement in the Selkirk Steelers Organization. "Hughey" enjoyed spending his time on the ice and on the greens. As a young child he grew up loving hockey and he never stopped. Dale took great pleasure in coaching his kids and mentoring many other players over the years. His second love was golf and some of Dale's best times were spent with family and friends golfing at Pine Ridge, Falcon Lake and in Palm Springs. Dale was always a happy glass half full' guy and his joy for life and sense of humour were contagious to everyone around him. His love of music always kept him drumming to the beat on his drive to his next destination. Family was most important to Dale and he always looked forward to family celebrations. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Dale's team at CancerCare Manitoba, "Captains" Dr. Butler, Dr. Wong, and Dr. Daeninck, and all of the nurses and support staff. Special thanks to the nurses and staff at St. Boniface Hospital, 6E in caring for Dale and supporting the family in Dale's final days. I knew Dale 30 some years ago through working with Angie. We had a blast playing slow pitch together and going to the bar after. Since we mostly lost, the "Payrollers" especially enjoyed the after game party. It was with great shock I learned only today of Dale's passing. My condolences to his family and friends. One less great man on this earth. - Posted by: Jodi Penner (Long time ago friend) on: May 30, 2017

I am very shocked and saddened to hear of Dale's passing at this time. From the first time I met Dale at Esdale Printing (King Street) and then later to my often 3 calls a day business relationship with him on DeBaets Street, I was able to develop a close working relationship with Dale. Although we weren't tight as friends, he became one. In a very stressful and at times chaotic environment we shared business solutions, stories, laughs and always hockey updates. I could always count on Dale for his honesty and fairness. My condolences to the Hughesman family and those special to Dale. He was a great guy. - Posted by: Larry Kabez (Business Associate/Friend) on: Jun 13, 2015

Sorry that this is so late coming. I have known Dale since our boys played AAA hockey together. Always a straight shooter and was very encouraging to Jordan (my son). He will be greatly missed. - Posted by: BARRY REID (FRIEND) on: Apr 03, 2015

Throughout the past 17 years I was most fortunate to see/talk with Dale many times every week. My fondest memory of Dale was watching his one and only hole in one at the 14th hole at Niakwa then watching as his brother put his shot 16 inches from the hole. But what I cherished most wass our talks; weather it was his vivid recollection of the most recent round of golf and his shot by shot detail, or his opinion on what the Jets must do to improve their lot. Dale was a man of integrity, always willing to assist you with a project and to offer support. Of course that always included his opinion! Dale and Andrea were the perfect compliment; sharing a bottle of wine as you hosted at your home or walking down the fairway at pine ridge, you were a true example of a loving couple. Adam and Matt, may you carry on your father's legacy as you forge ahead with your careers. He fought hard but in the end God needed a winger to work the corners. Know that Dale is watching over you and forever smiling down on you....missing you hughesy.... - Posted by: Tom Daeninck (Friend) on: Sep 20, 2014

I first met Dale when the boys were just young lads doing rust busters in six and under! I babysat the boys for many years and have lots of fond memories of the Hughesman family. Our bond grew stronger during my teenage years, where I had the pleasure of volunteering with Dale and Angie at the Tournament of Aces and watching and refereeing Adam and Matthew in the early hockey years. I've watched them both grow into fine young men who made their father so proud. When I needed another job putting myself through University, with one phone call I was one of Dale's labourers in the bindery at Esdale Printing Co. A job that lasted for many years until I completed school. There I had the pleasure of meeting his parents Ron and Margaret and his brother Darren and their families. The Hugesman family, through Dale is largely responsible for who I am today. Dale was a mentor, a boss and then naturally a friend who always trusted and respected me. He dedicated countless hours to his community and was a savvy and driven entrepreneur and family man. I will miss him greatly and am happy to have shared in so many happy memories with him and his family. My condolences to all of his family for your loss. I didn't hear of his passing until after the funeral service and regret that I couldn't attend. Rest in peace Dale, I will miss you. - Posted by: Logan Binda (Family Friend) on: Sep 15, 2014

Andrea, Adam, Matt & Nicole, I still find it hard to believe how quickly Dale was taken from you and the rest of us lucky enough to call him a friend. I last saw him in Morden at the Manitoba Games and he was laughing and telling me his "hot stove" stories about the BS happening in hockey. I'll remember his laugh and the way he was so very proud of his family. My prayers are with you all. - Posted by: Debbie Schween (Friend) on: Sep 02, 2014

My condolences to the family and all who were close to Dale. Thanks for all the fun times we had at Tri-City camps while the kids played hockey and us golfing between games/practices where you gave the break down on how the kids were playing. Wow I never would have thought needing market material printed for my business would have lead to an amazing 13 year friendship full of memories that I will always cherish. The times spent together with our families at the cottage( rumski's on the deck, hotdog BBQ's on the pontoon, and many golf games at Granite), spending Christmas together in Phoenix, solving all the world's problems until the wee hours of the morning on our numerous hockey trips with the girls and so many more. Dale, the Astropes are grateful to have had the honor of calling you a friend. Andrea, Adam, Matt, Nicole, and Darren our hearts are with you. - Posted by: Terry Astrope (Friend) on: Aug 08, 2014

We met Dale though hockey. He was a great coach and mentor to so many kids. His laugh was definitely one of a kind. We would like to send our deepest sympathy to his "BOYS" Adam and Matthew and the rest of the family. Dale was instrumental in making the Steelers what they are today. We are sorry we could not make the service however we were there in our thoughts. Once again, our family sends its condolences and may Dale live in our hockey conversations always. Sincerely, the Brooks family. - Posted by: The Brooks family (hockey friends) on: Aug 08, 2014

Dale was a wonderful man who touched many lives through his kindness, generosity and sense of humour. We will miss his contagious laugh and his gift of storytelling. As a family we have been reminiscing which have brought both laughter and tears. For the last 20 years Dale has left an indelible impression on the entire Derlago family. Clearly Dale's passing will leave a huge void in our lives and we will miss him dearly. To all of Dale's loved ones, although this is a difficult time, have comfort in the fact that he is now resting peacefully and will continue to be a part of your life through the memories that each of you cherish. I met Dale many, many years ago when he first started in the printing trade with Ron and Margaret. I always enjoyed our talks about the industry, hockey, Palm Springs and Mexico and got to know Dale really well over the years. Dale always made time for me and always treated me with respect. Going to miss his knowing smile. My heartfelt condolences to the Hughesman family. - Posted by: John Krainicuik (Business associate and friend) on: Aug 07, 2014

I had the pleasure of meeting Dale through Darren and although I only had the opportunity to meet him a couple times I felt as though I had known him for years. Just like his brother Darren and the entire Hughesman family he was so easy to talk to and so personable. I was fortunate enough to step on the ice with him to help run Nicole's practice a few years ago and he was very proud to say she had just taken up the game and he couldn't have been more pleased to be on the ice coaching her. I'll treasure that day as we sat in the dressing room (for a long period of time) after practice to just talk hockey and he was able to share his experiences and the success of his son's in the game and in sport. It's very evident by all these tributes that he left a great impression with everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him. The Bell family would like to extend our deepest condolences to the entire Hughesman family and special hugs sent to Darren,Shannon, Mason & Jordan. Our heart goes out to all of you and please know you are in our thoughts during this most difficult time. - Posted by: Fiona Smith-Bell and family () on: Aug 07, 2014

Dale was a fierce competitor on and off the ice. If he didn't agree with you on something he'd let you know about it but then it was forgotten. His laugh would fill the room. I'll miss that. His passion for life and his family was second to none. He will truly be missed. Rest in peace Dale. - Posted by: Andy Rewucki (friend) on: Aug 07, 2014

With heavy hearts we said goodbye to Dale our dear friend, a father, spouse, son, brother and uncle. For over 16 years through hockey our friendship grew. Where there were three boys Adam, Mason and Brendan there were three dads Dale, Wes and John. The laughter, the jokes the antics never stopped. Our families, along with our extended hockey family friends had some wonderful times, so many stories and so many memories we will forever cherish. You fought hard Dale without a complaint may you rest now. Our deepest condolences to the entire Hughesman family. Our parting is only temporary, we will miss you until we meet again. - Posted by: John / Maureen Shinnimin and family (Friends) on: Aug 06, 2014

I knew Dale through his brother Darren. I remember having a lot of fun during our neighbourhood hockey series: The Simpson Fleming Avenue Hockey Summit street hockey tournament. If I remember correctly, the Simpson Avenue kids won, but not because we had more talent. It was because we had a few more intimidating kids on our street. I remember the numerous times being invited out by the Hughesmans to their cabin at Falcon Lake. Dale was older, but always found the time to entertain Darren and I. Dale used to take us out to see the bears at the garbage dump. I always thought he was so cool to let us sit on the hood of his car while he drove around Falcon Lake at night with the radio cranked. Anyone who has ever known the Hughesman brothers has never met 2 more competitive people when it comes to sports. I remember one time when we were all golfing at Falcon Lake and Darren pointing out to me that there was a club stuck in the tree. I wonder if Dale ever did get it down... Dale and I shared an appreciation for humour. We had some great discussions about how we both enjoyed the humour of an old CJOB personality - Paul Palace (The Dean of Darkness) especially when Laurie Mustard joined the show. We had some great laughs. My condolences to the whole Hughesman family. - Posted by: Shawn Leslie () on: Aug 06, 2014

I was very fortunate to work with Dale for Manitoba Conservation in West Hawk Lake in our University years. He was working during the summer months as a Park Patrol and I worked in the Campground Office. I have lots of great memories of him, Angie, myself and many other fellow summer workers going on Houseboat trips, volleyball games, movie nights in Kenora, etc., on our days off. He was a great guy and will be missed by many. Angie, Adam and Matthew, my deepest condolences. - Posted by: Allison Feltham (Friend) on: Aug 06, 2014

I knew Dale through my years of school in elementary and high school. I reconnected with Dale and his family in my adult life, as Dale had coached my son Braden in his early years of hockey in ESP. Dale gave so much of his time to the community club and coaching. He wanted every child to be able to play hockey to the best of their abilities. I am grateful to have known Dale. My thoughts and prayers go out to Dale's family and friends. Heaven has gained another great angel. - Posted by: Judi cherniak (Friend) on: Aug 06, 2014

I got to know Dale thru coaching his son, Adam many years ago & thru Dale's brother Darren, who had brought Dale out to play no-check hockey with our team. During the year I coached Adam, Dale was a coach's dream parent as he never criticized or critiqued my coaching - he always had a smile & a word of thanks for taking the time to coach his son. When it came to sports, it was plain to see Dale was not only a talented hockey player but also excelled at golf and that he had a very competitive edge, whatever the game we were playing. I moved away a few years ago but I still recall fondly the golf matches that he, his brother Darren and I would play - win, lose or draw we would always retire to the 19th hole for some good spirited fellowship and many laughs. My deepest sympathy to all of Dale's family and friends as Dale was a great person and he will be truly missed. God's peace be with you Dale. - Posted by: Andy Speak (Friend) on: Aug 06, 2014

I first met Dale at the family business when I was a Community Officer in the north end, back in 1995. Dale was the type of guy you instantly liked and enjoyed his company. The move was made to the new location for Esdale Printing and our friendship followed the move. After joining the Goodfellow Bros Drag Racing team, Dale sponsored the race car providing financial support for a number of years and then made hero cards for the team. Because of the quality of work Esdale Printing did I approached Dale in 2007 on behalf of the Drag Racers Association of Manitoba. Dale helped DRAM develop a top quality souvenir program. Esdale Printing has produced the program every year since then. On behalf of Don Goodfellow, Army Valente and myself, GBR would like to extend our sincere condolences. Dale will be truly missed by all who knew him and he will never be forgotten. Godspeed - Posted by: Goodfellow Bros Racing (friend and sponsor) on: Aug 06, 2014

When Adam came to TriCities to play hockey, it was the beginning of a great era. Not only did we have so many Winnipeg boys on the team, but we also met some of the friendliest and most fun families we have ever met through billeting. One of my earliest memories of meeting Dale was at the tailgate season opener game in Adam's 16 year. Dale had printed many t-shirts renaming the TriCities the QuadCities: Pasco, Richland, Kennewick, Winnipeg. How original and how fun...just like Dale. Adam was great with fans, community events, charities, and with my special friend Jessi. Dale and Angie were obviously wonderful influences to have raised such a special kid. Tim and I enjoyed getting to know the Hughesman family and are much saddened by Dale's early passing. Our deepest condolences to his family. - Posted by: Tim & Dawn Johnson (friends through Adam's participation on the TC Americans) on: Aug 06, 2014

We are so saddened to hear the heartbreaking news about Dale. We first met Dale and Andrea when our daughter played for a hockey team that Dale coached and Andrea managed and we quickly became friends. We always loved Dale’s gentle and respectful manner with the girls and his great ability to teach the necessary skills to compete on the ice. He made every girl feel like an important part of the team. Dale was one of those people who immediately brought a smile to your face whenever you saw him and always wanted to know how our girls were doing. He was truly a nice guy and we will miss him. So long Coach. To Andrea, Nicole and the rest of the Hughesman family, our thoughts are with you. Stay strong. - Posted by: Kevin, Colleen, Nettie and Grace (Friends of Dale, Andrea and Nicole) on: Aug 05, 2014

This is truly heart breaking to know that a childhood friend and teammate has passed on much too soon. Dale and I attended schools together from elementary to high school but most of all I remember the teams we played together on at Morse Place CC. Dale played left wing on our soccer team, a talented group that realized our goal of Manitoba champs as 14 year olds. I was on the right wing and Dale was responsible for setting me up to score on many occasions. He kicked the ball past the D and I would run like hell to get it. A good strategy at that age. We also played a couple seasons of baseball at MPCC but the soccer team was our priority so we didn't play as much as we wanted to. I have the team pictures, lots of great memories. Dale was also an accomplished curler(smiling as I write this, it was a big deal to 10 year olds), winning the grade 5 River East School Division Jampail Curling Championship with Derek Tomashewski,Randy Kowaski and myself. The picture of our team taken at Dale's house during a celebration party thrown by his parents is on my fridge to this day. Thanks to the Hughesman family for that great memory. It saddens me to no end to look at that picture and know that Dale is no longer with us. My memories of him will not fade. We always had goofy jokes with lots of giggles, Dale's humour is admirable and relentless. I love that about him. Although Dale and I had not been in contact much since high school, it is obvious after reading all the messages posted that he followed his passions and became well respected in the community and a committed family man. I am proud to say that we were friends and teammates. The next time we meet you better have that $10 you owe me from the bet you made with me about Montreal not winning the 1979 Stanley Cup...thanks Don Cherry, you almost made me rich. Dale and I made the bet before the season started and I gave up trying to collect the winnings after 20 years. I always reminded him of it when I saw him...good laughs! Thanks for letting me share. My thoughts are with the Hughesman family. Rest peacefully Dale. - Posted by: Mike Foster (Classmate / friend / teammate) on: Aug 05, 2014

Over 2 decades working at MTC and the RWB, I came to know Dale as so much more than simply a supplier of excellent print products. He was an incredibly generous supporter of the non-profit sector. He was thoughtful, honest and kind. He never made a promise he didn't keep. And he had patience--REAMS of patience--along with a wonderful sense of humour. Most importantly, Dale was a Good Man. Thinking of his family, esp his boys, of whom he was so very proud. We've lost one of the really good ones. RIP Dale. - Posted by: Joan Stephens (Client ) on: Aug 05, 2014

I met Dale only one time when I was watching Adam play for the Americans. Just an all around great guy and so knowledgeable about the game. I learned from him in one meeting about the game, and more importantly about how to be a dad. Just one meeting, but he will be missed. My wife and I send our deepest condolences. - Posted by: Ryan Thiessen (Tri City Americans fan) on: Aug 05, 2014

Dale was always full of life, had a great sense of humor and was sincerely passionate about his family, his hockey and his golf. We shared a lot of laughs and those are the times that I will always choose to remember about Dale. He wore his heart on his sleeve, he'd give you the shirt off his back and he had the ability to always say the right thing at the right time to no matter what the circumstances. He will be truly and sadly missed by those whose lives he touched. My deepest condolences and sympathies to his family on their loss. - Posted by: Paul Krueger (Friend) on: Aug 05, 2014

I grew up next door to the Hughesman family. The Hughesman's were great neighbors and Dale, Darren and myself spent countless hours on our front street playing hockey with the other neighbor kids. Those were great memories for me as I was the youngest and least talented of the bunch. My wife and I also had the privilege of attending Dale's wedding at Pine Ridge. I will always remember Dale with very fond memories. My sincere condolences to the Hughesman family. - Posted by: Andy Dreger (Friend ) on: Aug 05, 2014

With great sadness I received the news of Dale, which immediately brought memories of a person I'd met as a child and had seen last as an adult, on our very last day of high school.....a man whom I'd grown up with, sharing virtually (possibly literally, I'm not sure) every year of school in the same class together since we were six years old. I knew Dale for ten months of every year up to high school grad, we spent our days together, parted at the end of June, and re-appeared in each other's worlds on that first day of school in September.... I remember growing up with a dude who always had a bright smile and a positive enthusiasm that could not be bridled, a guy with natural wit, and a fierce competitive spirit that was tamed with his kindness and his intelligence.....learning today of his hockey scholarship wasn't a surprise at all (!), his constant non-stop plethora of hockey facts or jokes or latest-news drove me nearly nuts!!...every day was a why-doesn't-he-stop-about-the-Jets-already-?? kind of day, which wasn't noticeable at first but matured and flourished with our passing young years, every day at school, almost every single day Dale's passion wasn't unapparent in the world....and.... thirty three years later I am able to realize whom Dale was making with that passion and he expressed it as a youth in his hockey and golf persona. 33 years later I'm able to see the gift of growing up with Dale Hughesman as a classmate, science project partner, goofy kid, and young adult. And to read here of Dale's life, and begin to appreciate in hindsight what a great man who that kid back then was spending such enormous amounts of energy bringing into our world. Our world became smaller and colder on August 1, 2014. Tim - Posted by: Tim Dwornick (Schoolmate - Salisbury to Kildonan East) on: Aug 05, 2014

Dale was truly and amazing man. His sense of humour and love of family, especially of my niece, Andrea and her daughter Nicole, will never be forgotten. You left us much too soon Dale and you will always be in my heart! You fought the battle hard and with a positive attitude and, for this, and other aspects of your life, I will always respect and love you! I know you will look after your family from a pain-free place! REST IN PEACH SPECIAL MAN! - Posted by: Helma Van de Mosselaer () on: Aug 05, 2014
