MICHAEL HUSKA After a life well lived, with strength, determination, patience and passion, our beloved Michael left this world in his sleep, on Saturday, August 2, 2014. Michael was born into a farming family, to parents who emigrated from Ukraine. He attended schools in Pine River and Souris, Manitoba and in subsequent years attained a BA and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Manitoba . Michael was a Second World War veteran, who trained and served as a Medic. Following the war, he worked for Blue Cross, selling medical insurance province wide, travelling as far as Churchill. He settled on a lifelong career, training as a teacher in Winnipeg, where he met the love of his life, Irene. In a wink of an eye they were married! Michael taught for 29 years, specializing in Junior High Language Arts, Guidance and Science. He was a pioneer of outdoor education, leading students into fields and rivers to study ecosystems and nature's mysteries. A man of many talents and interests, Michael was, at different times in his life, a beekeeper, a water Diviner, a writer of poetry and letters, who corresponded with friends, family and, notably, Nobel Laureate, Linus Pauling, with whom he shared a keen interest into Vitamin C. He developed an extensive knowledge of nutrition and naturopathic medicine, offering his advice to many. Michael loved music and loved to sing. He sang in choirs, school productions, in the car, in the houseand from his bed to the end. Michael also gave much time to the community - to the Cooperative movement, the New Democratic Party, the Winnipeg Teachers' Association, the Unitarian Service Committee, and Sturgeon Creek United Church. In retirement, Michael and Irene enjoyed their time together: travelling, gardening, dancing, playing cards, and most of all, time with family and friends. A man to whom family came first, Michael was a loyal son and supportive brother, a steadfast, loving husband, a devoted father and a caring, patient grandfather. Michal is lovingly remembered by Irene, his wife of 59 years, children, Miranda (Reid Baigrie), Myra (Jim Day), and Mark, grandchildren Julia, Connor, Jennifer and Mykaila, sister Pauline Palmer, in-laws Betty Gordon, Joan Van Mackleberg, Bob Oliver and Helen Gillis and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, sisters Mary Kohut and Alix Kaushakis and brother Ed Huska. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson Dr. The family thanks the staff at Concordia Hospital and Tuxedo Villa for their care and compassion. For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society or another charity of choice.
