ADAM NIESSNER On Saturday evening August 9, 2014 Adam Niessner left his loving family and friends to join his beloved Vera. Born in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1922, he moved to Winnipeg in his first year. He resided in Elmwood and attended Anna Gibson, Lord Selkirk and St. Johns Tech High Schools. He continued his friendships with former schoolmates of over 60 years with the Elmwood Every Second Tuesday Breakfast Club. He forged a career of more than 40 years at Motor Coach Industries where he started as a machinist in 1945, promoted to Design Engineer, Supervisor, Manager and subsequently to Manager of Liaison Engineering. He was a charter member of forming the MCI Credit Union and eventually served as president of the Cambrian Credit Union. His active interest in his daughters' athletic pursuits, especially Track and Field, led him to becoming an official in the sport. In 1972 he was sent to observe the athletics competition at the Munich Olympics and in 1976 officiated in the pole vault at the Montreal Olympics. A talented self-taught carpenter and later wood carver, his wonderfully realistic carvings of ducks and loons won him recognition and awards and most now are proudly displayed in the homes of his children and grandchildren. He had completed over 206 carvings and for a change of pace, made violins and then at a later age learned to play one. Other interests included involvement in the Goldeyes Scuba Diving Club at the Westwin Air Force Base in 1959. During his 20-year involvement with this club he was actively involved in building a 2-man submarine and participated in 8 annual club ice dives. Adam's love for the outdoors included a passion for the family cottage at Beaver Creek on Lake Winnipeg for 21 years for a total of 348 trips. His love for outdoors took him hunting and fishing and gardening with Vera at the St. James Horticultural Society gardens on Silver Ave. They received many awards for their produce, flowers, crafts and preserves. In 1980 he purchased a business in Nanaimo with plans to retire in BC but his family and love for Manitoba kept him here. Adam enjoyed travel and visited most of Canada, USA, Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska, and parts of Europe. Adam made wonderful use of every one of his 92 years on this earth. As he embarks on the next part of his journey, he leaves behind his three daughters, Judy Hames (Bob), Joyce Ling (Nils), Susan Bennett (Roy), six grandchildren, Adam and Kyle, Erin and Allison, Deanne and Julie and eight great-grandchildren with another on the way. He also says goodbye to a very special friend, Verna Howarth. Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 13 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Grace Hospital Foundation. The family would like to send a very special thanks to Dr. R. H. George and the caring and compassionate nurses of Grace Hospital who helped comfort and care for dad and us during his last week. Always loved and forever missed. Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • My husband and I offer our condolences to the family. While we did not know Adam well, as my father did, we did visit with him in Winnipeg during a Sinnott family reunion. He and Vera entertained us at their home with such warmth. He walked us to the community garden and shared that beautiful space with us and our children. What a gracious man! He made our trip to Canada so memorable. Just seeing he and my dad recall old times was truly joyful. - Posted by: Margaret Bailey (daughter of Sam Sinnott, friend of Adam's) on: Oct 14, 2014

  • Our prayers go out to the family of Adam. My dad n mom (Jim & Gwen Silvester) were neighbours across from Adam & Vera. They along with many others on Linwood St. would gather many evenings for a chat n good times. Then my mom n dad sold their home an moved to BC. My Dad is always a person to make sure all birthdays an Christmas are covered by cards an letters. So even after we lost mom he continued. He always kept Adam in his heart as a great friend he was. He will be sadly missed. - Posted by: Brenda Niziol & Jim Silvester (Friends) on: Sep 02, 2014

  • Dear Susan and family, please accept my sincere and heartfelt condolences for the loss of your father Mr. Adam Niessner. I am so sorry that I was not able to see Mr. Niessner this summer in Winnipeg nor attend his funeral, but he is in my thoughts and prayers. Mr. Niessner gave me my first job as his administrative assistant and I worked for him for approximately five years, and during those years Mr. Niessner was a very kind, patient and hard-working gentleman, and I have the utmost respect for him as a man of many talents, some of which are referred to in his obituary. As a young girl with no family in Winnipeg, both Mr. & Mrs. Niessner invited me to their homes for Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners, and I also visited them at their Beaver Creek family cottage. I am so glad to have had the opportunity to visit Mr. Niessner at the nursing home during my recent visits to Winnipeg, and to have had the opportunity to reminisce about Motor Coach Industries and the good old days. Mr. Niessner moulded me into who I am today, that being a career and family-oriented woman. I am now happily married and living in Oakville, Ontario. Mr. Niessner was always asking when I visited him whether my husband John treated me well, and so I wish to say to Mr. Niessner one final time that yes, John does treat me very well. I have such fond memories of Mr. Niessner, and he will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with the family during this time of sorrow. Rest in Peace Mr. & Mrs. Vera & Adam Niessner. • Please accept my deepest sympathy as I will not be able to attend the funeral for Adam. He was at my dad's (John Neufeld) 100th birthday party in 2013. I am so sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Sharon Burden (re: John E. Neufeld) on: Aug 13, 2014

  • Please accept my sincere condolences of the loss of your father. Adam used to pick up dad John Neufeld to attend the MCI senior breakfast club on the first Monday of each month. When Adam couldn't drive anymore I picked him up a few times and took both my dad and adam to the breakfast until my dad was not able to attend any longer. We talked often of Adam. I enjoyed reading about his life in the obituary. Thank you for sharing his life story. My dad died July 19th of this year and would want to sent his respects. • Enjoy the next part of your journey, Adam. I remember many fun times with you while my Dad, Andy, was still alive. Many people laughingly called you two Mutt and Jeff because of the difference in stature. I lovingly remember fun times at the S, D and D parties on the Red River. Now the 3 Amigos (You, Eddie and my Dad) are reunited forever. My condolences to your family. Love and hugs, Louise (Fedak) Dahle - Posted by: Louise (Fedak) Dahle (family friend) on: Aug 12, 2014
