Date of Passing: Aug 11, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEDWARD JOSEPH TABACHEK It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Edward Joseph Tabachek at the age of 69 at the Victoria General Hospital on August 11, 2014. Edward will be greatly missed by Jo-Anne, his wife of 45 years, sister-in-law, Sheryl Workman and her son Sean, brother-in-law, Ted Darragh, his wife Rilla and their sons Ryan and Shane. Edward was predeceased by his mother, Anne, and father, Joseph. Edward thought he had won the battle against AML leukemia with a wonderful team of people from Health Sciences Centre's D6 ward, Mac Charles Unit CancerCare and a bone marrow transplant in 2012, only to be struck by stomach cancer in the fall of 2013. Edward received a Civil Technology diploma from Red River Community College and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Manitoba. He had a varied career of being a draftsman, surveyor, microbiologist at a brewery, environmental technologist, cabinet maker and woodturner, but being a woodturner was his favourite. He was a gifted craftsperson, especially in creating beautiful wooden objects. Woodturning was a passion and he traveled to take courses from many famous teachers. Handspinners around the world have come to cherish Tabachek woodturned spindles and related spinning accessories. In 2008, Edward took up playing the cello and was a dedicated player under the tutelage of Karin Erhardt and the watchful eye of her dog Sam. Karin and Edward shared similar senses of humour and there was a great rapport between them. Whatever Edward undertook, he did with great skill and dedication he was a perfectionist. Our sincere thanks to the staff at the facilities that cared for Edward in the past few years. Recently, we were both shown great kindness by Dr. Kristjanson and staff at Urgent CancerCare and the paramedics and firefighters who transported him to hospital. A memorial service will be held Monday, August 18, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Edward's memory to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3E 9Z9. When I first started spindle spinning around 2008, I purchased a beautiful spindle that has been a wonderful part of my spindle collection. I love my Tabachek best. Rest In Peace😢 - Posted by: Tracy Wood (Customer) on: Oct 18, 2019

Ed fixed my bobbins for a Haldane wheel and wouldn't take payment. Said cookies were fine and my daughter's mother-in-law was living in Winnipeg and she baked cookies for him and took them to him. He then asked if she needed anything done! She wasn't a spinner though. - Posted by: Heather Sinclair (Ed did work for my spinning wheel) on: Feb 27, 2015

What a great joy it was to get to know Edward the few times that he came to spinning events. His sense of humor and gentle spirit were a blessing to everyone who had the chance to share time with him. Jo-Anne, my prayers are with you during this time of great loss. Please let me know if there is anything that I may do to help in any way. - Posted by: Sharon () on: Sep 21, 2014

I was greatly saddened to hear of Ed's untimely death. I've known Ed through my connection with the Wood Turners Association from its inception in 2007 until I left Winnipeg in 2009. Although brief, the time spent in Ed's company at inaugural meetings, Tim Hortons, or his home has always been enjoyable, entertaining and an opportunity to learn. He was informative and always willing to share his wood turning knowledge and demonstrate his skill. For a novice like me this was an invaluable and motivating experience. I convey my condolences to his wife and family members. He is not likely to be forgotten by those of us who have enjoyed his wit, friendship and benefited from his tutelage. - Posted by: Ed Bruni (Woodturning aquantice) on: Aug 18, 2014

Edward was a great asset to the spinning community. His humour and generosity ( and unconventional 'fees' for repairs - cookies and actual postage will work ) will never be forgotten. - Posted by: Debra in Aleza lake () on: Aug 16, 2014
