Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGRETE BARTHEL It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Grete Martha Anna Barthel on August 16, 2014, at the age of 94. Grete is survived by her son-in-law Bill Higham, three granddaughters Lorraine Higham (Dave Rodgers), Annette Bennett (Bill) and Wendy Hrynkiw (Brad), and two great-grandchildren Jordan Hrynkiw and Michael Bennett. Grete is predeceased by her husband Ferdinand (Fred) in 1995 and her daughter Dagmar Higham in 1998. She is also predeceased by her parents Martha and Adolf Lorenz, her two sisters Lotte and Ursula, and her three brothers Wilhelm, Hans and twin brother Adolf. Grete was born in Berlin, Germany on July 4, 1920. Grete & Fred were married on July 16, 1940. They had their only child, Dagmar, in 1943. They immigrated to Canada in 1954. Besides family, Grete's greatest pleasure in life was owning the Ellice Meat Market for 18 years. Her long hours there were truly a labour of love, as she loved and cared about the business, her employees and her customers. In her retirement, her favourite pastime was to knit blankets. First for family and friends, then she knit hundreds and hundreds that were donated to Children's charities. While knitting blankets she could also do her other favourite pastime, which was watching sports on television. Her favourite being tennis, but she loved to watch all sports. Grete was a very strong, independent and determined lady, and lived on her own; cooking her own meals right up until the day she became ill a month ago. She took great pride in this, and loved her independent condo living and had wonderful friends and neighbours in her building. A huge thank you to the Doctors, Nurses & Aides at Concordia Hospital N1S and St. Boniface Hospital A6S who showed her caring, compassion and dignity during the last month of her life. Funeral Service will be held at Klassen Funeral Home, on Thursday, August 21, 2014 at 3:30pm. Interment to follow at Sunnyside Cemetery.
