GERTRUDE EUGENIA EMERY (nee SCHICK) Gerty Emery passed away peacefully on Monday, August 18, 2014 at the age of 80 years. She was predeceased by Robert (Bob), her husband of 46 years, and by her sister Linda Flook. She is survived by her daughter Dianna (Roy Hall), her son Terry (Jane Scott), Bob's siblings, Ethel Campbell, Doris Dunn, John Emery and Steve Emery, as well as her many nieces and nephews. Born near Stornoway, SK on September 14, 1933, Gerty loved doing farm chores with her father and riding her horse. After school, she had her first teaching position at the age of 18 at Gonta School in Garland, MB. She then was part of Class A of the 1953/54 Manitoba Normal School, a period of her life she greatly enjoyed. A blind date schemed by her girlfriends at a baseball game was her introduction to Bob and on August 19, 1955 they were married. Gerty continued to teach at various schools in Manitoba, depending on where Bob's posting with the Armed Forces took the family. During that time, Gerty continued to upgrade her education, proudly receiving her Permanent First Class Certificate in 1970. In 1981, she decided on a change as a library technician, later working at Stony Mountain Institution. When Bob retired in 1989, they took up full time residence at the hamlet of Riding Mountain in the home they started building in 1967. It was home base as they continued to travel, visiting family and friends, locally and abroad. With Bob's passing in 2002, Gerty moved to Portage la Prairie and then in recent years to Winnipeg. Through the years she continued as best as she could to keep in touch with family, the friends she'd made at Normal School, the folks of the visually-impaired group in Portage, and the numerous friends of her faith. A funeral service will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, on Monday, August 25, 2014 at 10:00 AM. A private interment will follow later at Riding Mountain Cemetery. In lieu of flowers and should friends so desire, donations may be made in her memory to Canadian National Institute for the Blind.
