HOWARD JOHN BUTLER February 12, 1948 - August 24, 2014 With deep sadness we announce the passing of a great husband and father. Howard passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends. Left to cherish Howard's memory are his wife Lenore; son Sean (Lisa); daughter Kim; sister-in-law Helen of Langley, BC; nephew Dan (Lucy and family) of Vancouver, BC; and many other close family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents of Winnipeg, MB; and brother Harold of Langley, BC. Howard was born and raised in Winnipeg. He worked for many years at Johnson & Mager Architects then moved to Public Works Canada, and finally RCMP D Division. He truly enjoyed his job, especially his travels up north. In Howard's earlier years Howard was quite involved with Boy Scouts of Canada. He was always busy at home, helping family and friends, and loved a hot day on the deck by the pool. On Friday, September 5, 2014, Howard's Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. in Wojcik's Funeral Chapel, 1020 Main Street at Manitoba Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Howard's name to CancerCare or a charity of your choice. • Although only knowing Howard since 1999, our converstions and joke-sharing were always one of the highlights of my day. One of the biggest "hearts" I have ever had the pleasure of working with. My sincere condolences to you and your family Lenore. Howard will most certainly be fondly remembered by all that had the pleasure of meeting him. - Don Wilkie ( PWGSC ) - Posted by: Don Wilkie (Co-Worker) on: Sep 02, 2014

  • Howard and I have worked since I started with PWGSC in June, 1982; we worked well together. I was quite surprised to learn of Howard's illness and more shocked to learn of his passing. My deepest condolences are with Howard's family. - Posted by: Robin Sukhan (Work colleague) on: Sep 02, 2014

  • Dear Lenore and family - We were deeply saddened when we heard of dear Howard’s passing and we know that he would have found much comfort in all the love and caring that he received from you and other family members during his illness and especially at the time of his passing. We hope that you find some comfort in knowing that he is no longer suffering and that he is now at peace. I (Kandia) have shared a lot of fun, laughter and have many great memories of working (PWGSC) and socializing with Howard and Lenore. He was indeed a great and unique character who had a wonderful sense of humour and a great work ethic. He also was one of the most personable people we have ever known and a man who had an overwhelming enthusiasm for life. He will be greatly missed but not forgotten. Even though this separation is painful, we sincerely hope that the many special and treasured memories of good times, much laughter and happy occasions that you have spent together help you through this difficult time and remember that even though his heart may have run out of summers, he will always remain in yours, and the hearts of other family members and friends through those treasured times shared together. As we may not be able to attend Howard’s celebration of life, please know that you are being held close in our thoughts and hearts during this sad time. Keep strong and God Bless……Kandia and Dave - Posted by: Kandia Sarides and Dave (Friend and former co-worker) on: Sep 02, 2014

  • It was a real pleasure to know Howard through Scouting and also when he did design work at the VIA Rail Station for Citizenship and Immigration. Howard, you will be missed. - Posted by: Gordon Stewart (Scouts Canada 49th Group) on: Aug 30, 2014

  • Back in the 60's Howard and I lived one-half block apart. As teens we attended the same school, although were never classmates. During junior high we would visit at his house after lunch and walk to school together. We talked about whatever kids talked about, and he taught me to play the only piano piece I know, the Pink Panther theme. I never saw him after high school, but have thought about him often. I had hoped to see him at our school's anniversary events, but our paths never crossed again. The Howard I knew was a kind and caring teen. It sounds like he matured into the same kind of man. I sincerely hope he had a good life, albeit one cut too short. As he leaves me with good memories from 50 years ago, I expect he leaves those close to him with much, much more. My condolences to his family and friends. - Posted by: Doug Charles (Old neighbour/friend) on: Aug 30, 2014

  • My sincerest condolences to Lenore and family. Although the years Howard & I worked together were the best of the best, the most memorable times will always be those spent after hours with Howard and his soul mate Lenore. Getting reprimanded by kids for pulling an all-nighter without calling home and making too much noise at 1 (then 2 am) were firsts for us all. Thank you for the good times, "laughing til it hurts", cherished memories and sharing your Joie de vivre Howard - rest in peace until we meet again (I'll bring the butter tarts). - Posted by: Cathi Johannson (Friend) on: Aug 30, 2014

  • Howard was a good friend and a positive influence in the lives of many young men. A skilled Scouter that made camps and weekly meetings a great time and who shared his knowledge with fellow leaders. He was a role model for many and made the world better through those he developed. We'll camp together again some day. - Posted by: Barry Guttormson (Scouts Canada 49th Group) on: Aug 29, 2014

  • A really great person & friend. Never got to know you well, but what we did made us like you more each visit or meeting. Meet at some point once again. - Posted by: Conrad & Lynda Rear, Scott & Jamie (Freinds) on: Aug 29, 2014

  • When our trails crossed, it was always one adventure after another. He will be sadly missed by many many Scouts. - Posted by: Chris Gray (Scouts Canada 49th Group) on: Aug 29, 2014

  • While I didn't work with Howard for very long, when he was at the RCMP I really enjoyed working with him. He had an amazing sense of humour and I enjoyed our little chats around the lunch table. My condolences to the family. A life taken far too soon. - Posted by: Sherry Wood (Co-worker) on: Aug 29, 2014

  • Please accept my deepest sympathy to Lenore and Howard's children. Howard will always live on in my memories as we started our career together with the Federal Government over 35 years ago. I believe you are in Heaven running the biggest project and taking charge. You will be missed by many. Until we see you again my friend.....
