LEONA FLORENCE PAINCHAUD (née DESROCHERS) 1938 - 2014 After a three year courageous battle with cancer, Léona Florence Painchaud passed away at the St. Boniface Hospital on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at the age of 75. She is survived by her son Joel, sisters Ilene, Carole, Brigitte (Gil), and brothers Ulysses (Della) and Donald (Myrna). Léona was predeceased by her parents Alexandre and Auréa (Beaudry) Desrochers, and brothers-in- law Roger Lachance and Damase Dufresne. Left to forever cherish her memory are many nephews, nieces, grand-nephews and grand-nieces who affectionately called and always knew her as "Toune". Léona started her teaching career at the age of sixteen. She later pursued her lifelong love of learning by studying in France and she obtained a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Manitoba. She finished her career as principal of école St. Eustache. Léona will be fondly remembered by her many students and fellow colleagues after 51 years of teaching. Because of her love of history, she spent countless hours researching genealogy which led to her work on the history of the Cartier Municipality books and in the publication of several family books. Léona touched the hearts of so many people whether it be by her enthusiasm for teaching, her surprise candy gifts for the kids, the rides in the Ford Model A, or her offers of wine or "un p'tit verre de Scotch". You will be greatly missed! We acknowledge her friends and colleagues for their support during this difficult journey. A very special thanks to Leona's "Special Angel" Yvonne Fleury who was there for her every step of the way. MERCI YVONNE! The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at the St. Eustache Church. Interment will take place in the parish cemetery, and a light lunch will follow at the Cartier Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to CancerCare Manitoba, St. Boniface Hospital or any charity of choice. LECLAIRE BROTHERS in care of arrangements, 205-775-2220.

  • Dear Joel, Brigitte, Carole, Ilene. Leona's death is certainly a huge loss! My mother really appreciated the visits your mom and grandma made to our farm. She always had such interesting stories for us. I loved listening to her French accent along with my mother's German accent! Joel the very first time that we met you and your parents was the day of Carole and Rogers wedding. Several of us enjoyed caring for this little fellow. Thinking back Leona must have been a very busy woman and yet she found time to attend my high school graduation! Unfortunately I am unable to attend the funeral as we are living in Ontario! My sincere condolences to all of you and may your memories with her give you comfort and peace! fondly, Lily Hiebert Rempel - Posted by: Lily Hiebert Rempel (family friend) on: Sep 02, 2014

  • The times I recall coming to the farm when your grandparents welcomed us. They were wonderful people. Your mother was chip of the block as they say, because I see the same vigor and energy in your mom as I saw in them. What a wonderful life and memories they have given and left behind!
