ALAN BURCH 1942 - 2014 With his loving and devoted wife, Sharon by his side, Alan passed away on September 1, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer. Alan was predeceased by his parents Alice and Stanley Burch. Captain Al was a dedicated Air Canada pilot who became interested and immersed in flying at a very early age. Through his 50 plus years of flying he was pleased to have flown with and commiserated with so many wonderful people around the world. Al's outgoing personality plus his amazing sense of humour is cherished by all who knew him. Al and Sharon gained many cherished friends throughout the years and he will be so dearly missed by all of us, friends, family and Slick, his yellow lab. Al's interests and hobbies were varied - he loved his retriever dogs, his hunting, his fishing, his planes, and his lake! He also loved to tell a good story! Rest in peace, dear Al. We will miss you. Interment will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, September 5, 2014 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, with a memorial service at 7:00 p.m. with refreshments to follow. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to CancerCare St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, MB or The Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation in Kenora, ON. • A great friend, the best. I flew from Singapore to Winnipeg to go on a float plane club fishing trip. Fell asleep on the flight back to YWG. Al gave me a nudge and said "If were boring you, you should get a higher class of friends" I will remember his hearty laugh. RIP Al - Posted by: Mike McGuire (Friend) on: Oct 29, 2014

  • Our deepest condolences to Sharon and all of his many friends that miss Captain Al Burch and think of him daily. I do. I am happy I got to know Al and share some wild game meals and learn some great wild game recipes I still enjoy.(Al's bacon, onion, garlic, hunters pasta :-) We were honoured to host Capt. Al's Retirement party at The Old Pilots Pub. A great party with lots of great stories, rum & laughter. - Posted by: Al Smith (Friend ) on: Oct 27, 2014

  • My personal condolences on the loss of such a great guy like Al. I remember vividly having the pleasure of flying with Al back in the B727 days at YWG base, especially down to sunny and warm California. I shall always recall his keen intuition in the operation, along with his great character, sense of humor and kindness. God's speed "skipper." You will be missed sir! Respectfully, Gunner. - Posted by: Capt. Darryl Gunn (Colleague - Al's First Officer) on: Sep 13, 2014

  • I met Al many years ago at Lake of the Woods, a true gentleman and overall nice guy. Only recently found out of his death. So sorry to hear this. You are well remembered Al. - Posted by: Noel Martin (Friend) on: Sep 11, 2014

  • Always enjoyed flying with Al in the B727 as well as his 180. Al will be remembered and missed by many. - Posted by: Capt Bob Moore-Bunney (Friend and co-worker) on: Sep 05, 2014

  • I always looked forward to flying with Al. He told the greatest stories during our many hours crossing the oceans. Always entertaining. We shared a love of dogs, especially Labs, and he even named one that I brought home in the flight deck after a trip to Taipei. Many years later I still think of him often and fondly. Godspeed Al. Thank you for your humor, wisdom, skill, trust, and for generally making the world a better place. You will be missed. - Posted by: Laura Penikett () on: Sep 05, 2014

  • Sorry for everybody's loss of Capt Al Burch, his laugh said it all great person and I always looked up to him. I'm in Kelowna and when I see a b727 flying in I think of Al as I had the pleasure of sitting in the jump seat while he was at command.
