JUDITH DIANE WAINWRIGHT 1947 - 2014 Our mother, sister, aunt, and friend went flying with the angels on Friday, August 29, 2014. Judy was born in Calgary, Alberta on March 29, 1947. She was predeceased by her parents, Harold and Marjorie Wainwright, and niece Allison Filmon Carvey. She was loved and is survived by her sons, Stephen and Brian Greenslade, and daughters of the heart: Christine (Gavin Bannatyne), Rachel, Julia and William; Heather (Todd Innes), Sarah and James; and Pam Teare; sister, Janice (Gary Filmon); niece Susanna, and nephews, David; Gregg and their families and lifelong friends Rokie Bernstein and Doreen Docking. Judy was educated in Winnipeg and attended the University of Manitoba, receiving her Bachelor of Home Economics in 1968 and Bachelor of Education in 1972. In 1977 she earned her Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE) at the Merrill Palmer Institute in Detroit. Her professional career took her from lecturing at the University of Manitoba on early childhood education to being Professor and Faculty Student Advisor at Mount Royal College in Calgary. There were several other jobs in between that allowed her to gain skills in management and human resources. Judy loved children - her own and those of others. Her chosen profession allowed her to share both her love and her knowledge with countless young people over the years. Judy was afforded the honour of representing Canada on a trip to China to study in the area of ECE and day-care. She was nominated for the YM/YWCA Woman of Distinction award and was President of the Canadian Association for Young Children. Judy's ability to combine a full-time teaching career while raising five children and volunteering in the church and community, amazed and inspired her family and friends. The sudden and cruel onset of dementia meant that she was unable to enjoy the fruits of her labour and the company of family and friends in most of her last decade. She will be remembered for her loving heart, special brand of humour, delighting in celebrations, and embracing in a positive way whatever came her way. As she would say, "you play the hand you're dealt." She did it with class and grace. Judy's family extends thanks to the staff of West Park Manor for their care and consideration for Judy's needs during the past six years. A service of celebration of Judy's life will be held at Westworth United Church, 1750 Grosvenor Ave, Winnipeg, MB at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 8, 2014. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the Early Childhood Wainwright Scholarship at Mount Royal University, 4825 Mount Royal Gate S.W., Calgary, AB, T3E 6K6. • My thoughts and prayers are with Brittany Greenslade. I remember attending an event at Madison Square Mall in the Polo Park area of Winnipeg. It was nice to play bocce on the bare floor on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 with my MLO teammates Kit, Doug, and Darcie (retired) when kicking off the Special Olympics Manitoba fundraising campaign! - Posted by: Philip (Former athlete representative of Special Olympics Manitoba at the regional and provincial levels) on: Oct 29, 2021
