DORIS POWLS (nee STANNARD) Peacefully, following a brief illness, it is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Doris Powls, with her family by her side, on September 2, 2014 at the age of 99 years. Doris will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her son, Keith Powls (Linda Slade) of Winnipeg, her daughter, Valerie Speers (Ed Speers) and grandson Craig Speers of Ottawa, and several nephews and nieces in both Canada and the United Kingdom. Doris was predeceased in 1976 by her dearly beloved husband, Richard Powls, whom she missed until her passing. Theirs was a wonderful marriage from 1939 until Richard's passing. She was also predeceased by her parents, Zacharia and Eliza Stannard (nee Bennell), her stepfather, Herbert Crossman, and her brother William Stannard. Richard and Doris moved from England to Canada in 1948, and they lived in Winnipeg for the rest of their lives. Doris was a stay-at-home mom whose family was the center of her life for which her husband and family will be eternally grateful. Cremation has already taken place and, in accordance with Doris' wishes, no service will be held. The family is grateful to the staff of St. Boniface Hospital for the care they gave to Doris during her final illness and to the management and staff of the Thorvaldson Care Centre who lovingly cared for her for over seven years. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of their choice. THOMSON FUNERAL HOME 783-7211 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsonfuneralchapel.com

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Auntie Doris and Uncle Dick were always very close to my brothers and I as we were growing up. Auntie Doris was so kind to us and I have great memories of holidays and other times we spent with her. As an adult I enjoyed visiting with her and reminiscing. Rest in peace. - Posted by: Ann Collier (Niece) on: Sep 08, 2014

  • I have many wonderful memories of days spent with Auntie Doris, Uncle Dick and family. I think I was about 10 when Mum went to England for a couple of weeks and I went to Doris' house for lunch each day. It was the only time I ever spent time alone with her and it was great to get to know her a little more personally. Wonderful lady with a crazy unique loveable husband. Great memories. - Posted by: Robert Powls (Nephew) on: Sep 06, 2014
