JUDITH DIANE WAINWRIGHT 1947 - 2014 Our mother, sister, aunt, and friend went flying with the angels on Friday, August 29, 2014. Judy was born in Calgary, Alberta on March 29, 1947. She was predeceased by her parents, Harold and Marjorie Wainwright, and niece Allison Filmon Carvey. She was loved and is survived by her sons, Stephen and Brian Greenslade, and daughters of the heart: Christine (Gavin Bannatyne), Rachel, Julia and William; Heather (Todd Innes), Sarah and James; and Pam Teare; sister, Janice (Gary Filmon); niece Susanna, and nephews, David; Gregg and their families and lifelong friends Rokie Bernstein and Doreen Docking. Judy was educated in Winnipeg and attended the University of Manitoba, receiving her Bachelor of Home Economics in 1968 and Bachelor of Education in 1972. In 1977 she earned her Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE) at the Merrill Palmer Institute in Detroit. Her professional career took her from lecturing at the University of Manitoba on early childhood education to being Professor and Faculty Student Advisor at Mount Royal College in Calgary. There were several other jobs in between that allowed her to gain skills in management and human resources. Judy loved children - her own and those of others. Her chosen profession allowed her to share both her love and her knowledge with countless young people over the years. Judy was afforded the honour of representing Canada on a trip to China to study in the area of ECE and day-care. She was nominated for the YM/YWCA Woman of Distinction award and was President of the Canadian Association for Young Children. Judy's ability to combine a full-time teaching career while raising five children and volunteering in the church and community, amazed and inspired her family and friends. The sudden and cruel onset of dementia meant that she was unable to enjoy the fruits of her labour and the company of family and friends in most of her last decade. She will be remembered for her loving heart, special brand of humour, delighting in celebrations, and embracing in a positive way whatever came her way. As she would say, "you play the hand you're dealt." She did it with class and grace. Judy's family extends thanks to the staff of West Park Manor for their care and consideration for Judy's needs during the past six years. A service of celebration of Judy's life will be held at Westworth United Church, 1750 Grosvenor Ave, Winnipeg, MB at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 8, 2014. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the Early Childhood Wainwright Scholarship at Mount Royal University, 4825 Mount Royal Gate S.W., Calgary, AB, T3E 6K6. • Judy and I first met when I was 7 years old at Southwood Golf and Country Club. Judy was 10 and I was 7 learning the game together. We spent all of our summers playing golf from early morning until dark.We both had careers in the Early Childhood field and we both were born in Calgary and we both ended up moving from Winnipeg to Calgary in the 1980's.We got to enjoy our babies together. We celebrated all major holidays as "family" as neither of us had any family living in Calgary. Judy was more like a sister to me all through our years of friendship. We shared everything...our happiness, our zen for life, our passion for working with young children, out tough times, and our parenting challenges. As Judy began to decline I watched her inner light fade. Judy was the most positive woman that I have ever known and when she went home to Winnipeg I was lost I will love you forever dearest friend...you will be the brightest sysr and the shiniest Angel. • Judy was a mentor to me. She taught me that "every person in the life of a child who loves them is a gift". Those words are still important to me in my career today over 26 years later. I'm saddened at her passing... many times over the years her words and teachings come back to me. She has a legacy in those of us she taught to care, love and respect children as she did. - Posted by: Laura Kew (Russell) (Past student) on: Oct 08, 2014

  • I am so sorry to hear of Judy's passing. I was a student of hers at MRU in the early nineties. I learned so much from her and cannot believe she has been taken at such a young age. I know this comes late but I pray for her family that they remember her greatness always. - Posted by: Jennifer Herman (Past student) on: Sep 29, 2014

  • My deepest sympathy to your family on your loss. I was a student of Judy's at Mount Royal in 1990-1992. She was a wonderful teacher and confidant. She will be deeply missed. - Posted by: Kim ( Rich) Armstrong (Student) on: Sep 15, 2014

  • I have fond memories of Judy as a colleague at Mount Royal College and CAYC. Judy was a willing and giving colleague and friend. We have lost a true advocate for children and families. - Posted by: Linda Sutherby (colleague) on: Sep 09, 2014

  • Reading the above tribute to Judy, my heart engaged with the great loss of a wonderful woman who gave her best away to everyone she met. I will cherish the easy laughter and her compassion that remains tucked in fond memories. Even as her life changed and her needs grew, she had the most lovely way of caring of others wellbeing. . . . something that came from deep inside her being. I share my love and prayers for all whom she touched in her life and will smile fondly remembering a most beautiful soul. God bless you all who walked so closely in compassion and care.
