SOPHIE SHELEST Peacefully, it is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our mother Sophie Shelest on September 6, 2014. Sophie was born in Stuartburn Municipality on July 2, 1918. She is survived by her daughter Josie, her son Bill (Valerie), grandchildren Robert (Nanci), Brent (Mary), Christina (Marshall), and Martin, seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Sophie was predeceased by husband Mike in 1967, parents Domka and Gora Samborski, siblings Anne, Mary, Bill, Lillian, John, Mike, and son-in-law Bryan. Sophie left the farm at the young age of 13 to seek employment in Winnipeg. She had a very difficult time as a young person working as domestic help for a number of Winnipeg families. While she was working at the White Lunch she met the love of her life Mike, and married in 1939. Nan, as she was so affectionately known to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was a tireless worker, who loved her job at the Royal Alexander Hotel, numerous catering jobs where she made long lasting friendships, and operating the Paris Coffee Shop with her husband Mike. Upon Mike's death, Sophie would go on to work at the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce until her retirement in 1983. Nan's Sunday dinners were very important to her as that would be the time all of her family would always be together. She loved to cook all the traditional Ukrainian dishes and her perogies were second to none. Anyone who came to visit on Harrow Street never left hungry and even when it appeared to us that there was very little in the fridge to eat, mom would always find something to create a delicious meal. Cooking was her life and she did it with great pride. Whenever the opportunity arose, mom always took advantage of returning to the farm, a place she so dearly loved. May God grant her the rest she so deservingly needs. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 12, 2014 at 2:00 p.m., Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Condolences & Memories (11 entries)

  • Our condolences to Bill, Valerie, Josie and Family. No matter what the age it's always difficult to lose a Mother. Aunt Sophie was a wonderful lady who will be truly missed. I remember on one of her many visits to Vancouver she was questioned by Security to show the contents of a parcel she had. Would you believe she packed garlic sausage along with cooked chickens - yes chickens! The Customs Officer jsut shook his head in disbelief after she told him Winnipeg chickens were bigger and better than B.C. ones! Unbelievable! She was an amazing cook who could make something out of nothing! Cherish the memories always as it is the end of the "Samborski" family. May her gentle soul Rest in Peace. • Aunt Sophie was a very genuine and generous person. My friend and I imposed on her while we were between connections traveling to Alberta for our first nursing jobs. Not only did she welcome us and our cat to stay at her home but we feasted like queens. No one cooked like Aunt Sophie! - Posted by: Cathy Jaynes () on: Sep 14, 2014

  • Dear Josie I echo Nancy's comments. It was lovely to sit at dinner with your mom, Mrs Steele and my Dad.....she had the sweetest smile. Sally Flintoft - Posted by: Sally Flintoft () on: Sep 12, 2014

  • Our heartfelt condolences to both Josie, Uncle Bill and their families during this most difficult time. Your mother was very special to me. Over the many summers I shared with your family, Mrs. S took the place of my own grandmother I lost so many years ago. Her tender loving care and private chats we had together will always be cherished. She always put others first and enjoyed seeing us all enjoying her famous meals at her dining room table (crystal, silver, and white linen and all). The many walks up to the grocery store and then a quick stop off for fried chicken on the way back with Mrs. S and my cousins are some of my fondest memories that I plan to share with my own family today. With the strength, sacrifice, wisdom, and faith Sophie Shelest possessed, she built a beautiful legacy to all her family and future offspring that she now leaves behind. What an incredible lady! The Lord has taken her home now and given her everlasting peace and life. You were loved by us all and will be remembered forever because of how you touched our lives. - Posted by: Grover and Natalie Covington and family (Niece to Bill and Valerie Shelest) on: Sep 11, 2014

  • Hi Josie. So sorry to hear about your mom. You were such a great daughter to her. I have often thought of her since dad died last November. Had no idea she's worked at The Royal Alex Hotel! Our family lived there in 1967 when dad was transferred to Winnipeg with the CPR and while we were waiting to move into our house. Grand old hotel. Lovely obit. Thinking of you. • Whenever we visited our family in Winnipeg, we were privileged to visit with Sophie Shelest, and treated to a wonderful dinner, where perogies and many other wonder foods were served, and the hospitality was so warm and welcoming. We always were treated with take home packages - back to B.C. with garlic sausage, and perogies, which she prepared and packaged for us. She deserves her rest now with our Lord Jesus. She did give always with a warm heart. God Bless her now for always.
