Just today, after 16 years, I found an old boarding pass from a flight on 21 January 2004 from Calgary to Vancouver. I was on my way to Christchurch, NZ, my first trip away from North America. I sat in 3F and in the seat next to me, as I would later write, sat Gary Corbett. We chatted a wee bit and we quickly learned we were both somehow connected to Air Canada. My father was employed with Air Canada in Windsor until 1997. It turned out that Gary remembered my father, Dennis. Gary was gracious and spoke with a tone that made me very clearly remember his name later that day and write it down so that I could call my dad. I intend to do so now. I offer warm wishes in his memory and best to his family. - Posted by: Colin Walsh (row mates YYC-YVR) on: Apr 02, 2020

Lifelong friend, a lifetime of memories. I first met Gary shortly after he met Mardell when we were still in high school. My last memory of Gary is under the tree on a Friday afternoon this past February at Spruce Creek Fly In with Mardell, her sister Diane and family, watching the air show. Gary's first loves were Mardell, the boys and family, his grandsons and flying. Good friends, too. He was so proud of his garden and loved to show it off, especially his potatoes. My heart goes out to you Mardell and your family at this incredibly sad time. Rest in peace dear friend. Love, Linda - Posted by: Linda Stieler Johnson (friend) on: Sep 14, 2014

What a great guy to fly with. We did many flights at night dodging thunderstorms in the Viscount with it's primitive radar. He was a master at reading it. Even after the flight and in our layover hotel sipping on our favourite beverage we would comment how we could still see the flashes of lightning before our eyes. We had some really good times together. He shall be truly remembered . My deepest condolences to Mardell and all the family. So long my friend Sincerely, Al Gejdos - Posted by: Al Gejdos (fellow pilot) on: Sep 13, 2014

I'd like to express my condolences to Mardell and family for the loss of Gary. Karl had many fun stories of Gary and the boys when you lived close by and enjoyed Gary's stories and advice about aviation. Gary and Mardell were helpful and supportive for many events in our lives. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this most difficult time. Sincerely Donna Kirner - Posted by: Donna Kirner (Friend) on: Sep 13, 2014

He made coming to work and sharing the cockpit fun and this continued after the engines were shut down. We would sometimes meet in the bar for a debriefing and a transformation from pilots to his favourite, “licensed pipe fitters”, I will never forget the look on strangers faces as he blew smoke out of the corner of his eyes promoting the immediate question as to what do you do for a living. Most discussion seemed to end after his Licensed Pipe Fitter routine. We were alike and shared epics of our lives in Germany which will always be memorable. Great Guy, my heart goes out to Mardell and Gary’s family. - Posted by: zeke zabolotniuk (collegue) on: Sep 13, 2014

Somehow I thought this day would never come, as Gary has proven countless times over the last many years that he could keep on enjoying life, regardless of the health issue that he was fighting. I was privileged to work with him, prior to his retirement from active flying, and have many fond memories of the time we spent together in a flight deck. I have many great stories involving Gary, that I have enjoyed passing on over the years, and just thinking about them brings a smile to my face. I regret that I will be unable to attend the gathering of friends and family, who will be remembering Gary, but I know after the service and during the debrief, there will be lots of laughter and reminiscing. My sincere condolences go out to Mardell and family. He is gone, but certainly not forgotten. Like Garth Brooks sings about in his song , The Dance, you can miss the pain, but you would have to miss the dance.
