Condolences & Memories (55 entries)

  • Mr. Kroeker was one of those extraordinary principals who managed to see who you really were, at the very core. I have never really met anyone quite like him. His gentle way of encouraging, supporting and believing is his students often filled the gap in our own confidence. If I felt doubt, his kind and supportive smile always made the challenges manageable. He was one of those rare people that was able to support us while encouraging us to find our own "answers" to those overwhelming teen-age self-discovery questions. I felt blessed to have known him and, more importantly, to have learned from him. His legacy lives on in many of us. - Posted by: Margaret Olmstead (Former Student) on: Mar 27, 2017

  • What do you say about this wonderful man? You touched and inspired the lives of so many of us - the compound effect of that is beyond reckoning. - Posted by: David Dutka (Former FRC Student ('86)) on: Sep 28, 2014

  • I have only fond memories of Mr. Kroeker and my days as a Centurion. Mr. Kroeker's enthusiasm was infectious and he inspired each of us to dream big. He had a big impact on my life and I'm sure on the lives of hundreds of other students. Even years later, he always remembered my name and which musical productions I was in! My heartfelt condolences to Anita and the family. - Posted by: Cheryl Smith (FRC Grad '79) on: Sep 26, 2014

  • My mother, Jean Smallwood, was a secretary at FRC in the early-1970s. She fondly recalls Mr. Kroeker as a kind and compassionate employer who went above and beyond his call of duty when it came to his students and staff. I had the honour of attending FRC in the 1980s under Mr. Kroeker's caring, enthusiastic, and exemplary leadership. I echo the fine sentiments of all the people who have written about Mr. Kroeker in this guest book. My mother and I express our sincere condolences to his family at this difficult time. Mr. Kroeker was a superlative human being and educator. He shall be missed.... - Posted by: Carrie Smallwood (FRC alumna) on: Sep 23, 2014

  • I was very sorry to hear about Mr. Kroeker's passing. I have fantastic memories from FRC, and always remember a big smile on Mr. Kroeker's face. Although you don't consider it when you are a high school student, I now realize the tone and fun/relaxed feel of FRC was largely due to Mr. Kroeker's influence. He was an amazing principal, so encouraging, and a positive influence for creativity, art, music, as well as academic success. Truly a life well lived with positive effects on hundreds of students. Condolences to his family. - Posted by: Kim Green (Former FRC student) on: Sep 23, 2014

  • I was just a little kid in Altona in the 1950's. Mr. Kroeker was the principal of our school. He always liked music and he and his wife introduced it to our school. Apparently I loved music too...but I could not hold a tune. In order not to hurt my feelings Mr. Kroeker sent me to a voice class with his wife Anita. End result was Mrs. Kroeker said some children could hold a tune and other's that could not would mix up the kids that were singing. Then she showed me how to move my lips without making a noise ...lol.... I think they call that lip syncing these day... hurt my feelings. Still sing like a stone...lol - Posted by: Joan Martin (Teacher) on: Sep 19, 2014

  • Bert was a wonderful principal, leader and musical director. Bert gave me the opportunity, and the confidence to sing on stage. He also presented me with the opportunity to study with a wonderful voice teacher, and I have been singing ever since. I never got the chance to thank him, I can only hope he saw how we all grew as performers, and people throughout the musicals! As a teacher, I can see how leadership like Bert's turned FRC into the all round exceptional school it was. My condolences to his family. - Posted by: Cindy (Dyck) Muirhead (Student(grad 1980)) on: Sep 19, 2014

  • My heart feels sad at the passing of Mr. Kroeker. I recall with gratitude how he instilled a sense of pride and belonging in me as a student at FRC - how he talked about "the proverbial carrot" and "feeling ten feet tall". I thank you, Mr. Kroeker, for your passion for the arts, for supporting the annual peace marches downtown, for talking to me about teaching, for providing a place where I felt known - and yes, I, too, am singing the centurion song again these days. Peace and blessings to Mrs. Kroeker and your family. - Posted by: Ellen Kristjanson (FRC Alumnus '83) on: Sep 19, 2014

  • We are all better people for having known Bert. He was truly a blessing to the world and will be missed. Sincere condolences to Anita and family. - Posted by: Lisa Sinnicks () on: Sep 19, 2014

  • Sorry to hear about his passing (I, Bill) worked as a stationery engineer, my wife was a student at FRC. I did some adding a room to his house. Our Condolences. - Posted by: Bill & Dorie Giesbrecht (Friends/Student and Co-Worker) on: Sep 18, 2014

  • The word inspiration has been repeated many times about Mr. Kroeker, and he truly did inspire excellence in people. Walking the halls of FRC and calling his students by name made everyone feel like they were known and cared for. Mr. Kroeker lived using music to draw out of people hidden gifts and passions that gave us confidence to expand our futures. God has touched many people through his life and I echo someone's tribute by saying well done! - Posted by: Bonnie (Student at FRC) on: Sep 18, 2014

  • So sorry to hear of Mr. Kroeker's passing. I owe him a big thank you for allowing me to become a teacher at FRC and have the best 25 years that a teacher could have. Due to this man FRC continues to be one of the best high schools in Manitoba and as many teachers will attest to, a great place to interact with students. - Posted by: Les Mitchell (Teacher at FRC) on: Sep 18, 2014

  • Words cannot even articulate the power, influence, and impact Mr Kroeker had on my life, and obviously so many others. So much joy, and enthusiasm, encouragement, and belief that anything was possible...and would be done! :) he is 50% of the reason why I do what I do, Mrs Kroeker is the other 50%. May you rest in eternal peace Mr Kroeker, and may your family, and friends always feel your strong, loving, fun spirit wherever possible! Heart-felt condolences. - Posted by: Laura McAlpine (voice student, neighbour, church member) on: Sep 18, 2014

  • I remember thinking, even as a teenager, how much Mr. Kroeker enjoyed his job. He was always full of smiles and encouragement, and was a truly involved principal. He will be missed by anyone who had the good fortune to meet him. He lived a very worthwhile life. - Posted by: Mandy Chisholm (Konopasek) (Student at FRC (Class of '81')) on: Sep 17, 2014

  • Falcon Lake is where I had the pleasure and privilege of getting to know Mr Kroeker and his family. Every summer for as long as I can remember Bert and Anita were always there with a friendly greeting and a offer of help if needed. I was also thankfull as a kid growing up summers at Falcon Lake to be able to befriend his daughter Nancy. The Kroekers are one of the best neighbors I have ever had. They are welcoming when I was a kid growing up through to when I was blessed with my own children. Welcoming them as well, more specifically this past August long weekend when they entertained them with board games at their cottage. My children will also miss him. He also took the time To show me the many plane models he had built since I last saw his collection. Also all of the remote controlled planes that were there that he was very proud of. We disscussed at length the many flights his son-in-law had shared with him over the years. Bert was always active at the cottage and enjoyed boating every summer and looked forward to his children and grandchildren coming out. A very kind and generous man who gave a tremendous amount to all those he was in contact with. I remember this past August long weekend having a laugh with him about his call to the government parks department about the increase in taxes for cottage owners. Bert asked if, with the increase he would see more services? Then, Bert said they replied "don't hold your breath" lol Another fond memory I have of Bert is when, one summer, he asked my opinion on some medical issues. As a wound care nurse at the time I was glad to provide what information I could. I am thankful that I had that opportunity to help someone who, in my opinion, was always there to humbly help others. I am very saddened by his passing. Having seen him at the beginning of August, very friendly, cheerful, generous and active it reinforces that life is short. In my eyes he had always been a young spirit and will live on in my memories of him that way. My condolences to the whole Kroeker family, extended family, and friends of a great man. Sincerest regards and respect , Todd , Tanner, Grace and Mackenzie Hamin - Posted by: Todd Hamin (Neighbor at Falcon Lake, MB) on: Sep 17, 2014

  • I vividly recall to this day Mr Kroeker giving extremely effective positive personal encouragement when I was trying something new at FRC in music. From the comments above its obvious that was a universal experience, and he was a force for music and theatre. Thanks Mr Kroeker for the personal support, and more importantly for helping so many people. - Posted by: Chris (student) on: Sep 17, 2014

  • I was saddened to hear of Bert's passing, and my heart goes out to Anita and the family, and I know that every Centurion who knows is feeling the loss. Bert Kroeker was our biggest cheerleader; not just for the school as an entity but, as has been mentioned, for each and every student. It was impossible not to be aware of his enthusiasm while attending, and I was always proud of our school and the people in it, but I have to say that it was only as I matured as a person and interacted in the world of education that I came to understand just how profound was his influence. It is through leadership like Bert's that a school collects a teaching team of great talent and allows them the freedom to teach creatively, while ensuring that all of the various parts work together for the whole school experience. You don't have award winning programs as we experienced without the right type of support at the top. I have never met a Centurion who does not remember Bert as a great man. Thank you, Mr. Kroeker, for your unending support to your students, your school, your community, and to Music in Manitoba. - Posted by: Bill Prouten (FRC student, Class of 1983) on: Sep 17, 2014

  • What a tremendous loss to the family and the community. As teachers go - he was the kind of educator that we who have followed in his footsteps aspire to be. Even though Fort Richmond Collegiate has a nice ring to it, I'm liking the the sound of Albert Kroeker Memorial High with a statue or plaque in the foyer. I will be there in spirit this Saturday as your life and contributions are celebrated by those whose lives you touched so profoundly. Fly high Centurion! - Posted by: Michael Tetrault (Student at Fort Richmond Collegiate) on: Sep 16, 2014

  • My fondest high school memories were taking part in the wonderful musicals that Mr. Kroeker led so enthusiastically. I will always remember how kind and joyful he was. He was Fort Richmond Collegiate. My thoughts are with the entire Kroeker family. - Posted by: Jodie Brisbin (Student at FRC) on: Sep 16, 2014

  • Oh, my - I am so very sorry to hear of Bert's passing! I so very fondly remember Bert as my principal when I was a student at Golden Gate School in St. James-Assiniboia during the '60s. He was always warm and encouraging, especially, of course, of our musical endeavours. It was such a pleasure to make his acquaintance once again when later I became a music teacher, first in St. James-Assiniboia and later in St. Vital/Louis Riel, and brought my school choirs to participate in Choral Fest. There was Mr. Kroeker, volunteering and as smiling and encouraging as ever, genuinely pleased to connect with a student from his past. He will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Betty (Bradley) Trevenen (Former Student) on: Sep 16, 2014

  • Bert and his wife were an inspiration to all his students. He was a great teacher and person. My sympathy to his wife. - Posted by: Les Friesen (Former student at Altona Collegiate ) on: Sep 16, 2014

  • Feeling both a deep sadness at Bert's death and a deep sense of gratitude for the many delightful gifts God gave him (and that he shared!) with all of us. Love to the family in this time of grief and remembrance. Praying that the power and truth of the resurrection may uphold you at this time... - Posted by: Rev. Dr. Ross Lockhart () on: Sep 16, 2014

  • I don't think I appreciated Mr. Kroeker enough as a kid.... until I left Fort Richmond and became a music teacher. As teachers, many of us emulate his zest for life, love of music and firm belief that YOU can make music with your heart and soul! Thank you Bert. - Posted by: Katharine Kingdon (Meadows) FRC grad 1979 (student) on: Sep 16, 2014

  • I pass on my deepest sympathies to the Kroeker family. Mr. Kroeker was not only a loved and respected teacher and principal; he was an inspiration to each and every student. A truly global citizen, he taught me to open my eyes and mind to the world and its issues. The Centurions salute you. - Posted by: Glen Sanderson (Student FRC, class of 1985) on: Sep 16, 2014

  • Bert Kroeker was one of the kindest and most enthusiastic educators I've ever had (and I've been lucky enough to have several of them). I will forever remember with affection all of the musicals he supervised, and especially how he and his wonderful wife Anita made all of us kids in those musicals feel like a million bucks. Anita, my gratitude to you and Bert, and my genuine sympathy to your entire family. - Posted by: Donna Carreiro (Former student) on: Sep 16, 2014

  • Bert was truly a fantastic man, his personality, zest and that twinkle is his eyes was infectious! As one of Anita's voice students he helped me so much with my performances, especially musical theatre and made me feel like a part of the family! He made everyone he came in contact with feel special and loved. Thank you for everything you did Bert, much love!! My condolences and love to you Mrs Kroeker and family! - Posted by: Sarah Zacharias (voice student) on: Sep 16, 2014

  • Bert Kroeker was an FRC icon. He was a true leader, but he always had a smile for everyone. He pushed us to excellence and we will always have that. Thanks, Mr. Kroeker! - Posted by: Bill Spornitz (Former student at FRC) on: Sep 16, 2014

  • I was a the youngest of 5 in my family who all had the chance to meet Mr Kroeker. I spent some time in his office, but he showed me the error of my ways and pointed me in the right direction. And now I find myself working as an educator. Thank you Mr Kroeker. - Posted by: Timothy Whitman (student, class of '87) on: Sep 16, 2014

  • Bert Kroeker was not simply the principal of Fort Richmond Collegiate (FRC), he was FRC. Mr. Kroeker truly left the community an educational legacy, which led the way in academic excellence, in addition to excellence in the arts and sports arena. He was a true leader as he translated a vision into reality, and along his journey, inspired others to reach their personal potential. Mr. Kroeker, we thank you! The ‘centurion spirit’ will continue to thrive because of you! My sincere condolence to Mr. Kroeker's entire family. Rest in eternal peace, Mr. Kroeker. - Posted by: Kendra-Ann Seenandan-Sookdeo (Centurion Graduate 1986) on: Sep 16, 2014

  • Bert, along with Anita, always made me smile. We shared passionately the love of music, and their introduction to my life as customers evolved quickly to become a deeply valued friendship. Bert made my life and the lives of countless others richer. He was, and will remain, a Blessing. Anita, I am holding you and your family prayerfully in my heart. With Love, Judy - Posted by: Judy Pringle (Friend) on: Sep 16, 2014

  • What a wonderful and joyous human being! I attended FRC after he had retired but he still came around to visit and support the band and choir departments at concerts or sometimes just randomly during the day. I have a vivid memory of him dropping by rehearsal in my first year in choir, in December. We were preparing the Ukrainian Bell Carol and I thought we were doing alright - but when he joined us (the basses), suddenly everything was intensified to a whole new level. The sheer energy and absolute love for music that he demonstrated in just two minutes really inspired me that day, and since then I've tried to recreate that feeling for myself in others, both in practice and performance. He also recruited me to play trumpet at SCUC a number of times, which was always a joyous collaboration. I have many fond memories of great service music thanks to him. Bert's positive and welcoming attitude coupled with his radiant smile and love for song will no doubt live on in thousands of hearts, inspiring many. Thank you, Mr. Kroeker! - Posted by: Miles Thomsen (Student/Musician) on: Sep 15, 2014

  • I have nothing but fond memories of Bert. I enjoyed playing in his many ensembles at Sturgeon over the years, and his positive attitude could light up a room. He will be missed. - Posted by: Chris Craigen () on: Sep 15, 2014

  • Bert became my principal when I was a relatively young teacher in the process of developing a personal philosophy of education. Bert became the mentor and example for me of the student centered approach I wanted. I worked with Bert producing five different school musicals and witnessed a leader who brought the best out of those students. There was a place for the gifted and the not-so-gifted. There was encouragement and challenge. He cared for the struggles of individual staff members and their personal lives. His enthusiasm was infectious. His love for Fort Richmond Collegiate was over the top. We were all Centurians and he was a wonderful leader. What a privilege and joy to have worked with this gifted man. My deepest sympathies to Anita and the family. - Posted by: Norman Fullerton (Bert was my principal for 16 years.) on: Sep 15, 2014

  • Anything I write will not do justice to the man. I have yet to meet anyone else with such pure love and enthusiasm for life and doubt I ever will. So long Mr. Kroeker, and well done... well done. - Posted by: Michelle (student) on: Sep 15, 2014

  • Such vivid memories of our school's finest Centurion! Bert was a role model for all who crossed his path. He cared so deeply for education and music and had endless energy. • I remember my first year in Grade 8. Bert was our principal in the newly opened West Park High School. He was a tall and lanky man and walked with a quick pace. Bert was also our neighbour and he asked me often to join him when he flew his model plane. Bert, you taught me a lot with your encouragements, "If you are going to do it, do it now!" and "Don't be afraid to try and fail, just try again!" Thanks for giving me your time when I was your student. It DID make a difference. - Posted by: Gerald W Loeppky (Student of Principal Bert Kroeker at West Park School) on: Sep 15, 2014

  • It was a pleasure getting to know Mr. Kroeker over the past few years as a student at FRC in the 90s and now as a teacher. His enthusiasm for FRC pride was always inspiring. We (teachers and students combined) will miss his annual "Bert Kroeker Centurion Spirit" Award speech at our FRC Grad ceremony. - Posted by: Megan Johnson (nee Dixon) () on: Sep 15, 2014

  • Bert was principal of A. C. Miller Collegiate in Altona during the years I attended there from 1956-1959. Although our relationship was not without its challenges, I respected him, and he warmly remembered me when I met him in downtown Winnipeg earlier this year. He seemed to be in excellent spirits and health, and news of his death is a real shock. My heartfelt condolences to his family on your loss. May pleasant memories see you through your time of grief. - Posted by: Bob Strong (Student) on: Sep 15, 2014

  • Bert was a wonderful teacher who believed in the potential in all of his students. He loved to teach - that was never more evident than when he had the chance to fill in for a teacher at the last minute. I had the wonderful experience of going on exchange with him to Germany. I feel so blessed to have known him - his example has and will continue to influence my actions towards others. My regards and love to Anita and the whole Kroeker family. - Posted by: Shauna Prouten (Student from Fort Richmond Collegiate) on: Sep 15, 2014

  • Albert (Mr. Kroeker) was -- and always will be -- as grand, considerate and knowledgeable a soul when I knew him as a student, and will remain so in the hereafter. I will never forget receiving my diploma. He said my name with the familiarity of a dear friend, as if he was alongside me all the way through that journey. Indeed, I do believe he was. - Posted by: Christopher Pavlik (Student, Class of 1985) on: Sep 15, 2014

  • One super great teacher and friend. His fondness for music with his wife, Anita, will always be remembered. Bert taught us to enjoy drama, poetry, music and many other subjects. He had a way of making the subjects come to life. My most recent contact came through the internet when witnessing again the hearty singing in the program "Time to Sing." The whole effort of the beautiful old fashion hymns were again brought to life as they sang lustily and with feeling and conviction. A picture of Bert & Anita singing was captured from the internet and has a place in my den. Who of his students in the mid 1950s will ever forget the production of the Mikado with the tireless efforts of Bert & Anita. - Posted by: Norm Hiebert (Former student at the Altona Collegiate ) on: Sep 15, 2014

  • Every summer at Falcon Lake I was amazed at how our neighbor Bert never seemed to slow down. Always a friendly greeting, asking how the family is doing, and keeping himself involved with various activities. Always willing to lend a helping hand when needed, or tell a story or two. My sincere condolences to the family, we will miss him. - Posted by: Tracey Hamin (Neighbor at Falcon Lake) on: Sep 15, 2014

He has touched countless people, and I know that he changed my life forever for the better. My sincere condolences to Anita and his whole family. We all feel his loss, and I cannot imagine the sadness his absence brings to all of you. My father Orv, who is in hospital right now (but doing well) would also send all of his very best wishes to all of you. He has always had a special place in his heart for Bert. And who can forget the Mikado and our capable coaches, Bert & Anita. Both of you were appreciated so much! - Posted by: Shirley Sawatsky Neufeld (student & teacher) on: Sep 15, 2014

  • Sincere condolence to Anita and family. It took many years after graduating from the Altona Collegiate to realize the positive influence many of the teachers and especially your husband passed on to the students. We met by chance several times over the last 50 years and each time he recalled the late 50's with fabulous clarity. His work on this planet is complete. - Posted by: Roger Leuzinger (Student of Principal Albert (Bert) Kroeker circa 1958-59) on: Sep 15, 2014
