YVONNE O'BRIEN
Born: Dec 03, 1924
Date of Passing: Sep 17, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryYVONNE O'BRIEN It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother on Wednesday, September 17, 2014. She will be deeply missed by her son Michael (Angie), daughter Susan (Walt), grandchildren Courtney, Brett, Ian (Claire) and Arianne (Matt), and great-grandchildren Ewan and Millie as well as many nieces and nephews. Yvonne was predeceased by her parents George and Flore McKay, husband Thomas, her brothers George, Gordon, Donald and Charles, and her sisters Annette, Irene and Florence. Yvonne was born in Winnipeg on December 3, 1924. She attended Laura Secord School and Gordon Bell High School. Mom enjoyed a happy and comfortable childhood despite growing up fatherless during the Great Depression. She often talked about the many times her mom drove all the children in the old Ford to the country side for picnics and ice cream. Yvonne was a very friendly and sociable person. She treated everyone kindly and always found some good in a person even when they couldn't themselves. That might explain why she received a card every Mother's day for several years from one of our friends who had the misfortune to go to prison. In return, mom was loved and respected by many people. Mom enjoyed the five years our family spent living in Vancouver. In Montreal, where we lived for five years, mom made friends with all the neighbors even when language was a barrier. But Winnipeg was always "home" and mom was happy to return at last to her brothers and sisters and the neighborhood where she grew up. Yvonne worked for the Workers Compensation Board until her retirement in 1984. Her grandchildren were very dear to her and mom had a prominent role in their upbringing. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors at Health Sciences Center and Grace Hospital for the kindness and care they gave to our mother. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba. www.chapellawn.ca 885-9715

Michael, Angie, Sue and Walt and grandchildren. I remember our parents as young, vibrant happy folks. It is so sad to see the end of an era as Aunty Yvonne is the last to go of that generation on the O'Brien side. Your Mom was so congenial and wonderful to us kids. My Mom and Dad had so many good times with Uncle Tom and Aunty Yvonne While us kids made havoc. Please accept our deepest sympathy for your loss. Mothers are irreplaceable and missed forever. All my love. Sharon O'Brien Westergreen and Charlie. - Posted by: Sharon O'Brien Westergreen (Niece) on: Sep 24, 2014

Our thoughts are with you Michael, Angie & family and Susan & Walt and family. Aunty Yvonne, the last of my Mom Irene's family (Mckay's). She reminded me so much of my Mom; to me they looked the most alike and had the same fun spirit. I smile when I think of the memories Aunty Yvonne left me. As a child: family get together's at her and my Uncle Tom's house on Garfield and lunches at her apartment on Booth or at Legends restaurant. I learned to tell time at the house on Garfield and years later Aunty Yvonne shared family history over lunch on Booth. My daughters share a fond memory of dancing the night away at a family wedding. Aunty Yvonne and Uncle Tom were my favorite. They were both so kind and understanding of our large, loud family, even when we were tearing around the Garfield house playing hide and seek. I will miss Aunty Yvonne but am grateful for the memories. - Posted by: Elaine Ashley () on: Sep 23, 2014

Offering our deepest sympathy to your family on the passing of your loving Mother. May she rest in peace and may you all be comforted in knowing there are so many of us who share in your sorrow and grief at such a difficult time in your life. Know that your dearest Mother is now at rest and being held in the Lord's embrace. You will all be together again one day. Take care and be strong in faith. - Posted by: Carol and Kim Watson (Friend/Co-worker of Michael and Angie and Family) on: Sep 20, 2014
