LEONARD LOUIS COWIE Sadly on September 18, 2014 Leonard Cowie passed away at the age of 85 at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. He will be greatly missed by his son Cecil (Delaine), daughter Lorna (George), daughter-in-law Sandra (Don) along with grandchildren Lynne (Rob), Shayla (Chris), Sarah (Tim), Amanda (Alek), Kelby (Kylie), Shannon (Nevada), Christopher, and great-grandchildren Harley and Arden. He is survived by his brothers Cecil (Pauline), Lloyd (Diane) and sisters Eileen (Rene), Marion, Rita (Harvey deceased) and brother-in-law, Ron (Vera deceased). Leonard was predeceased by his loving wife of 61 years, Edith, son Kenneth, sisters Vera and Doris, parents Louis and Grace. Leonard was born April 7, 1929 in Oak Point, MB where he spent his childhood and eventually moved to Winnipeg in his early 20s to work. He eventually met his wife to be, Edith, and were married in 1952. They raised their family in St. James/Crestview area as well as in Oak Point with the many relatives. They purchased the Oak Point "cottage" in 1976 and spent the next 25 years between the city and country. During the summers, Len was busy with the vegetable gardens and garage sales. Fall was the time for duck hunting followed by fishing on Lake Manitoba during the winter. Len worked at CNR and Union Carbide. He moved to MTS in 1982 and retired from the workforce in 1992. After his hockey career in Oak Point, he started refereeing in Winnipeg and southern Manitoba. Len spent many years playing fastball with the Union Carbide and Westinghouse teams and then the senior slo-pitch league in Charleswood. Other activities included curling, bowling, cribbage and later, floor curling. Len and Edith competed in the MSOS games playing slo-pitch and cribbage. They travelled a lot visiting friends and relatives and spent many hours entertaining and spoiling the grandkids. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Health Sciences Centre for their assistance and support. Please join us in remembering and celebrating the life of our father, brother, grandpa and great-grandpa. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 26, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB. • Leonard was a joker and was always up to something. When they lived beside us in Oak Point the tricks went back and forth. His best was the male mannequin which was stuffed in our shower stall when Diane had a group of women out golfing. When the curtain got pulled back there was a few screams. Len was a good hearted fellow, always lending a hand and helping out. He was honest, hard working, caring and a great family man. He was loved by many and will be missed. Goodbye Zeke. - Posted by: Leonard Cowie (Brother) on: Sep 23, 2014

  • What a wonderful man and especially a wonderful uncle. Lots of great memories. Shot my first duck hunting with him. Always the "nick name" giver. One time he took us rabbit hunting in the winter. My brother did not have his hunter safety so he made him carry the dead rabbits and later named him the "rabbit hunter". After that my brother never went hunting again. Another time, I took my boys to see their cousin play hockey. Uncle Len was there and between periods he walked by my young sons and rubbed their heads. My youngest son, who didn't know him, took a swing at him. As we were leaving the arena, my oldest son was telling me of this old man who kept bothering them and hollered "there he is" and pointed to uncle Len. I saw him later that night and passed the afternoon adventure which made him smile with delight. Rest in Peace Uncle. Thanks for wonderful times and memories - Posted by: larry pitre (nephew) on: Sep 23, 2014
