ROBERT MACKENZIE BAXTER C.D. Robert "Bob" Baxter, born to Lionel David Mackenzie Baxter and Elsie Baxter (nee Middlecott), at the Hotel Dieu Hospital in Kingston October 3, 1920 died in Winnipeg September 23, 2014. Bob grew up in Crescentwood on McMillan Avenue. He was a lifelong member of St. George's Anglican Church, performing sidesman duties for five decades. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces at the outbreak of the Second World War and at the age of nineteen was posted overseas, stationed in England. Bob spent his career as an Army Captain in supply, safety, transport and education, including thirteen months in Laos as part of the United Nations peacekeeping force. In 1948 Bob married Margaret Patricia Baxter (nee Heidahl) of Stonewall; she predeceased him in 1988. Bob, Pat and the family were posted to Edmonton, Calgary, Camp Borden, Dawson Creek, Whitehorse, Werl (West Germany) and finally Winnipeg where they settled on Fulham Crescent. In addition, Bob served in Churchill and Norman Wells. Upon retirement from 28 years in the Army Bob worked as an administrative officer for the federal government and then the provincial government in occupational health and safety, finally retiring in 1982. He moved to a beautiful condo on Wellington Crescent for twenty years and spent weekends at the family cottage near Grand Marais. He delighted in daily breakfasts out with his friends and family. In 2008 Bob, still healthy and driving his car, and owner of Kitty, moved to a sunny comfortable suite in the Portsmouth Retirement Residence. He enjoyed friends and staff there immensely, and lived there right to the end. Bob is survived and mourned by his five children - Pamela Baxter (John Orr), Nancy Coates, Hollister Baxter, David Baxter, and Robert Baxter (Jacquie Harder), and by his five grandchildren - Leif (Laura), Ross (Carmen) and Hans Baradoy and Eric and Karen Orr, and by two great-grandsons Jaden and Weston Baradoy. Bob was predeceased by his brother Peter. Bob is survived by his sister-in-law Eve Baxter and her four children, several cousins, and numerous nieces and nephews on the Heidahl side. There will be a service Friday, September 26 at 1:00 followed by a reception at St. George's Anglican Church, 168 Wilton St. and interment at St. John's Cathedral in the family plot. In lieu of flowers Bob prefers donations to the War Amps. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • So sorry to hear of the passing of this kind and gentle man, the last survivor of his generation of the family. He was a long time without his beloved wife, and made a lovely life. They are finally together again. Condolences to all the family. - Posted by: Gwen Willox (Niece) on: Sep 26, 2014

  • I wish to give my condolences to the family. Even though I have been away I still recall many of the conversations that I had with your Dad. He seemed to contact my mother occasionally. Now all of the Heidahl family are gone. I know that all of you will not remember me but I was compelled to acknowledge and convey my sympathy at this time. Sincerely, Ron Good - Posted by: Ron Good (Nephew) on: Sep 24, 2014
