JIMMY (JAMES NORMAN) SMITH Jimmy slipped away from us on September 22, 2014 with his wife and best friend, Joan, at his side. He was a unique individual and he touched many lives with his zest for life and loving heart. His many friends are too great to list at the risk of missing some, but you all know who you are because today there is a small hole in your lives. Fill the hole with memories of adventures had, golf games played, trips taken and glasses raised. Jimmy will be forever in the hearts and minds of Joan; his stepsons: David, wife Lucy, and grandsons Tristan and Noah; and Cameron, wife Kelly, and granddaughters Maryn and Rowyn; his dad, Norm; his brother-in-law John and sister-in-law Patricia and families. Papa Jim was very proud of his family - especially his grandkids. He was predeceased by his mum, Ferne in 2013. Cremation has taken place and there will be no formal service. Friends and family are encouraged to remember him as you knew him - in so many different ways. Should you wish, donations can be made in Jim's memory to the Winnipeg Humane Society. His "girls" were a big part of his life and Sammy and Danny are missing him too. Rest well, Babe. Joan, I was very sad to hear about Jimmy's passing. He was a great guy and I will always remember how friendly and kind he was in welcoming me into the Rossmere golfing community back when Sue got me into taking up the sport. He was a fun guy with a booming voice and a heart of gold ! I enjoyed our Warroad trip and of course the Jamaican golf tournament we were all in! Please accept my heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Rest in Peace Jimmy! - Posted by: John MacKenzie (friend) on: Oct 01, 2014

Please accept my condolences on hearing about Jim's passing. Whenever I hear Jim's name it would put a smile on my face. I remember playing ping pong for hours in my basement, tennis at sargent park all summer long. Baldy was the only person I knew who could light a smoke while skiing down a mountain. Again on behalf of my brothers please accept our condolences. - Posted by: David Langstaff (Friend) on: Sep 30, 2014

I had the pleasure of knowing Jimmy for a brief time. We enjoyed a fantastic golf holiday to Pebble Beach some years ago. I can honestly say his company was special and made our holiday great. I am deeply saddened by his passing. Will always remember that deep drawl for the tee box "oh tugged it a little" - Posted by: Barrie Nelson () on: Sep 28, 2014

Joan, I am so sorry for your loss. My deepest condolences to you, your family and all of Jimmy's friends...of which he had many! I will never forget his warm personality and of course, that deep, deep voice that always welcomed me with a "Hey! How are you?!" He always had the time for a chat and made you feel welcome no matter where or who you were. I will miss his presence around Rossmere, but will always have the memories to cherish. Take care Joan... thinking of you at this difficult time. Rest in peace Jimmy. - Posted by: Cam Moskal (Friend) on: Sep 28, 2014

Joan, I was so saddened to read of Jim's passing. While we had drifted apart many years ago, he was my first best friend. We met in 1960 in Brandon when I was 8 and he was 6. We both had a love of hockey and Jim's house was 2 doors away from the Park Community Centre. Every Saturday and Sunday, I would walk down 15th Street, stick and skates in hand. We would lace up and play the entire day, only stopping for a bowl of hot soup and a sandwich prepared by Ferne. Summer turned to Little League Baseball. Sports brought us together, but Jim and I became best friends in all regards. I was so pleased that he agreed to act as best man at my wedding. I have spent today looking at photos of him that I have kept over the years. He was truly a wonderful friend and I feel fortunate to have known him. In all the years we shared, I think of the fact that he was the only person I knew that never had a bad word to say about anyone he met. I am so sorry for your loss. Rest in peace, "Baldy". - Posted by: Michael Craig (Friend) on: Sep 27, 2014
