RICHARD TEDFORD (TED) BATTERS 1924 - 2014 It is with deep sorrow that his family announces the death of Richard Tedford (Ted) Batters, at 90 years of age. On Monday, September 15, 2014, at the Grace Hospital, Ted passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Saviour. Ted was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Muriel. They can now enjoy eternity together! Remaining to forever cherish Ted's memory are his four children; Donna (Larry), Ted (Audrey), Gary (Beverley) and Mark. Grandpa's (Papa's) unconditional love and positive encouragement will be missed and deeply treasured by his grandchildren; Tara, Christopher, Joel, Shayne, Sahara, and Jason. Ted was predeceased by his parents, Richard (Dick) James Batters and Stella Elizabeth Batters and siblings Loyall, Everett, Perry, Dorothy, and Maurice. Ted was born February 13, 1924 in Portage la Prairie and spent his boyhood helping on the family farm. When the Second World War broke out, Ted joined up and spent three years in the Royal Canadian Air Force. During this time, while stationed in Montreal, Ted met Muriel MacCartney, who was working as a civilian on the base. They were married on March 3, 1945. Several years after his release from the service, Donna and Teddy were born. Ted and Muriel moved back to Portage la Prairie where both Gary and Mark were born. It was about this time that Ted began his career with the railroad, beginning with CN, CPR and eventually Via Rail, attaining the position of Station Master at Winnipeg's Union Station. Wherever Ted and Muriel lived, they were very active in their home church and, in particular, Ted took several leadership roles in First Baptist Church in Portage la Prairie. He enjoyed the fellowship at Church of the Way after the family moved to Winnipeg in 1966. Ted's last years were spent at the Donwood Manor in Winnipeg where he faithfully managed the recycling duties for the entire building! His personality, sense of humour, and genuine interest in others won Ted many friends over the years. It is these people and his large family that will miss him so much! A special thank-you to the medical staff on the third floor at the Grace Hospital for their care and professionalism in Ted's final days. A celebration of Ted's life will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg on Saturday, October 11 at 2:00 p.m. www.chapellawn.ca 885-9715

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Uncle Ted We live in BC so growing up I was separated from my mother’s family and her brothers on the prairies. After my own father passed away in the late 1980’s Uncle Ted began regular visits with my mother and during those visits I was fortunate to spend many days in his company. Uncle Ted was a Christian and exuded kindness, faith and love, all with a wonderful sense of humour. I feel his “unconditional love and positive encouragement” that “will be missed and deeply treasured.” During our times together he became a father figure whom I could trust with my inner feelings and always received a sympathetic hearing usually ending with a good laugh between us. Thank you for our memories and to this day you always bring a smile to my face and will for years to come. Uncle Ted rest in peace, enjoy your next adventure in heaven. - Posted by: Jack & Rosie Allingham and Adri, Brett, Kira, Kyle and Reece (Nephew) on: Oct 09, 2014

  • So sorry to hear of Ted's passing. He was the consummate gentleman and one of my favorite people to work with at the Railway. Tho it's many years ago I still have good memories sharing odd shifts and remember particularly how pleasant he, as a seasoned railway man, made my first days so much easier and pleasant. Thanks Ted! A wonderful man! - Posted by: Ronalee (Co worker at CPR & VIA Rail) on: Oct 07, 2014
